Here we are again, another crazy-busy week (for all, I’m sure!) If you saw my kids’ playroom and bedrooms yesterday you’d wonder where their mother’s been…
This week was a full week, not only for me with Startup Princess events and pageant prep but with my son’s school play, Willy Wonka where he’s one of the 110 Oompa Loompas! School plays=long rehearsals and in the charter school where we go, it also means lots of volunteer hours. I was make up girl this week… lots of red cheeks, red lips, eye liner, and making sure kids behaved backstage, etc. It has been a fun and rewarding experience for everyone.
Looking back at the week I can see where I succeeded and well, failed. It’s time to re-evaluate things and plan on a better week! Read more
How to Avoid Big Mistakes in Marketing to Women Online
March 12, 2008
Today’s magical wisdom provided by Fairy Godmother Holly Buchanan, co-author of The Soccer Mom Myth, newly released this week. Congrats to you and Michele Miller for making it to the finish line (or shall we say scoring your goal?) A full review of the book will come soon… reading it while I’m on my treadmill! (not kidding)
Anyhow, the following article will give you a glimpse of Holly’s work and research. Enjoy! (BTW, Holly, I need a bigger photo of you…sorry it’s so small here).
Women are shopping online in record numbers. The Internet is the perfect fit for women’s increasingly busy lives.
But don’t make the mistake of thinking women shop the same way online as they do offline. Offline, she is much more likely to browse, look around, see what’s new, even socialize with friends.
Online she is task oriented. She does not want to browse for hours. You must make it easy for her to accomplish her goals quickly and easily.
There are specific things you can do to create a better online shopping experience for your female customers. In my e-book, The 7 Biggest Mistakes in Marketing to Women Online, I look at the top mistakes online marketers make and how to fix them. Here are a few of the top mistakes:
#1 - Believing the Lowest Price Always Wins. Some things actually matter more than price. Providing what she feels is a good value is always important. But she may pay more to find something that is just right.
What can you offer to her that perhaps an online store can not? More selection? More product information? A chance to get to know who you are? (You do have an About Us page that tells your story, don’t you?) A chance to gather information and ask questions without feeling pressured? There are many advantages to shopping online. Make sure you take advantage of those advantages.
#2 - Failing to Establish a Relationship with Her. Have you noticed that most websites leave you feeling cold? You don’t feel like you really know who the company is?
Speak her language. Most websites have copy that is formal and full of clichés - “We’ve been in business since 1987 providing turnkey solutions to take your business to the next level.†Try using a more conversational tone, lose the clichés, and get rid of the techno-jargon. Be clear. This does NOT mean be condescending. It simply means if you have a benefit that sounds technical (think product specs) explain how that feature is a real benefit to her.
Mrs. Utah United States Pageant Training: Chapter 2 (Mentoring by Mrs. America 2002, Energy Therapy, Wardrobe Miracles, Eyelash Extensions, Meeting the Contenstants, Isagenix, and Losing my Mind)
March 9, 2008
Here we are again, Startup Princess Friends! I really do enjoy writing this post each week as a mental release of all the intensity and to download my thoughts and feelings about this time of my life… it really has been a whirlwind of planning, appointments and events and it’s not going to stop anytime soon but I’m up for it, if I can just get myself disciplined to be in bed early…that is my major weakness right now, forget sugar addictions, it’s the time after my kids are in bed, I really should just hop in bed too, but there’s emails to answer, etc. so it’s so tempting to stay up but then I’m dead at 5:30am when my alarm rings to exercise… wish me luck on conquering my staying up late addiction. (Any advice?)
Here’s the recap of last week’s highlights:
My online friend and BYU alum introduced me to his famous mom, Laurett Ellsworth Ardez, mother of 7, whom is so stunning and charismatic that she won not only her state title, but Mrs. United States 1997 and Mrs. America 2002 (the latest one was when her oldest was in college) titles! I had the privilege of chatting with Laurett and she’s agreed to assist me with my preparations. She’s wonderful. I’ll be meeting her in person in Vegas in a couple of weeks for training.
This week I also had the opportunity to have an Energy and Rapid Eye Therapy session with Karey
Williams, whom also competed in Mrs. Utah (last year and was 7th overall, she had a great attitude and was absolutely adorable on the DVD I watched last night, she is so full of light and confidence, I love it). I met Karey at Cherie Burton’s Women Emergence conference last Fall where I was her “guinea pig” to demonstrate what energy therapy was and I had a great breakthrough in front of the conference attendees so I knew that I’d be able to get even more work done in a one on one session. I went to her specifically to release all negative energy and thought processes from my teen years when I felt unattractive and had self-doubts, fears about my body and skin breakouts, dating/not dating, etc. We had an awesome session and I highly recommend this type of work! I felt like I had lost weight energetically afterwards and genuinely more happy about myself and my appearance, life mission, and the pageant in general.
Ever since I decided to do the pageant I’ve been very nervous about the wardrobe. Cherie Burton, my pageant mentor/friend and I have been emailing each other back and forth possibilities, but it’s been pretty depressing! I knew I needed an absolutely radiant wardrobe, however, I’m petite and it’s challenging to find clothes for my size, and I’m also very determined to be modestly dressed, even in the competition I’ve chosen to wear clothes that cover my shoulders and not too revealing or low cut, etc. I had started shopping a little but was discouraged. I asked God to bring me my wardrobe and He did this week (minus the swimsuit, I am having that made). At the pageant workshop on Saturday Leeja Gammil our pageant wardrobe resource brought several stunning dresses and interview suits that we could rent from her and I was able to find a gorgeous Jovani $900 dress in deep purple that fit my exact needs (plus it was already worn in a national pageant for Miss America and the girl won top 10 with it, so it has already proven it’s a winning dress!), and I get to rent it for only $200. I also found a beautiful coral suit from Paris that I can rent for $100. Both outfits will be custom tailored to fit me better. I also found my black cocktail dress, modest and hip at Macey’s this week for only $29, 90% off the retail price. Love it! I felt God’s tender mercies in hearing and answering my prayers to find wonderful clothes that wouldn’t compromise my values or standards.
Startup Princess Linda Bledsoe of Absolutely Fab-u-lash in Provo/Lehi, Utah sponsored me this week to get a full set of eyelash extensions and I love them! They took 3 hours for her to individually glue each new black mink hair onto my own lashes, but it’s a great effect. No mascara, no glued in fake ones needed for the event! They will look great for my pageant photos and then I’ll keep them up for the pageant in May. I love waking up and feeling beautiful (without the dark mascara smudge residue that sometimes happens when you wake up).
On Saturday we held our first Mrs. Utah pageant workshop where we met the other contestants and heard a few speakers and saw the fashion show of pageant gowns (where I found mine!) We have 11 contestants this year, much lower than last year’s 20, so I guess everyone will make the top 10? I can’t imagine they’ll cut one person. Three of the girls who made top 10 last year are in this year’s event and one is even having a baby next week, amazing (she won the fitness/swimsuit category last year, so I think she’ll do fine getting back in shape). The best part of the event was the speakers. Cherie Burton spoke about her own experience and tips, this year’s Mrs. Utah, Tiffany Berg spoke about how to develop your platform, and Rock Crawler Racer, Clay Egan taught us how to get sponsors. I set a goal of securing $6000 in sponsorship funds to cover my expenses and have enough should I win for nationals 6 weeks following the competition.
Matt bought Isagenix all-natural 9-day cleanse for us both and I agreed to try it because he wanted a diet buddy however, really I was against it because I don’t like liquid cleanses, I generally feel faint and I’m anemic so its hard for me. I got through the first two days where there was shake morning/night and a low calorie lunch of 600 calories, but today’s was all liquid and I really had a hard time with it. I felt so weak and unhealthy. I took a 3 hour nap because of the hard, long week, but in general I had no energy and it was very difficult emotionally and mentally. I’ve decided not to continue with the all liquid days, I’ll do the two shakes/1 meal for a few more days, but I really want to get back to my veggie/protein diet that was going really well for me, then I felt vibrant, healthy, happy, and full of life.
I enjoyed all of my weight training sessions last week with Liz, I did a few Billy Blanks DVD sessions too…those really are a challenge, wow!
I lost my mind a bit because of all of the activity going on… so much to think about and remember, etc. I’m an advisor for the home-based business plan competition/center for entrerpeneurship and we’re in the midst of that, I helped with a charity event last week for African orphans, my son’s in a school play, the pageant activities, and my day to day home maintenance, laundry, kids, etc. as a result I lost my keys, misplaced my wallet one day, and locked my spare keys inside my car while in SLC at a tradeshow last Saturday and the kids and I were stuck there for a few hours until we could get some help breaking into the car with a slimjim….ugh. So, yeah, I need more sleep.
Cure for reclaiming my mind? Read this scripture from 2 Timothy 1:7
For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind
Today’s Magic Wand: SLEEP. Seriously how much do YOU get a night? I’m aiming for 7 hours at least 5 times this week. Join me in this goal and comment below!

Be Realistic about How You Plan Your Day
March 5, 2008
Today’s magical wisdom provided by Fairy Godmother Mary Wilson-Burkett, professional life and career coach. Mary coached me last year and encouraged me to try the method below. At first I thought it was incredibly restrictive, but then it was liberating to give myself permission to succeed in baby steps… ideal for a mom entrepreneur like myself!
Several months ago, a very talented entrepreneur told me that she felt this idea of balance is a myth. Trying to stay in balance just didn’t work for her. The more we talked, I realized that at this stage of her life– married, with growing teenagers and cultivating a business, her definition of balance was about touching every base every day did seem unrealistic. In addition, she told me that “living by a calendar” was frustrating. Rather than point out that her definition of balance was unrealistic, I tried to guide the conversation to show her that her instinctual method for living each day was effective, to a point, and that she was living more in balance than she realized.
But to really get her to the point where she felt that she was living each day effectively, I asked her to start each day with a simple list of the three most important things she felt needed to be accomplished that day and check each one off as it got done. This method felt less restrictive but still helpful to her.
The bottom line? Don’t be afraid to plan but plan realistically. Make the method fit your life. Too often we get stuck trying to make our life fit the method. This is backward thinking. Find or create a way to plan that fits your life. Something as simple as a list of the three most important items for a day can help you feel more balanced and effective.
Why Don’t More Women Compete in Business Plan Competitions?
March 4, 2008
Recently I went to review business plans for the first ever Home-based Business Plan competition at BYU where I am a volunteer Advisor. For the past 8 months we have tried to reach the women students at BYU and get them excited about competing for $5000 cash and sharing their awesome business ideas in this contest. Today we read the plans submitted and there was only 1 from a female student. This was incredibly discouraging to me because they are the primary reason we started this competition!
We had several events leading up to the competition deadline and I spoke at a few of them… there were a lot of women there, even 2 weeks ago at my lecture “How to Write a Business Plan for Beginners and Procrastinators” the room was packed, standing room only, and there were at least 20 women there… so yes! I’m discouraged with the turnout for the competition largely because for me, being a participant/competitor is what started my FIRE in business… I loved the excitment, the networking, the mentoring, the opportunities. I’m also frustrated because we have hundreds of Startup Princesses who would LOVE that kind of money and probably can’t qualify for any college business plan competitions right now.
So I brainstorm… what stops the women from competing??
Perhaps the key factor in getting the business plan done for students is that it just seems “hard” since they’ve never done it and if they aren’t a business student, they don’t know where to begin. I was at this place when I started my first one, so I know how it feels. We tell them to use Palo Alto Business Plan software and provide it for FREE… I used that to do my first one.
Another factor may be they need more mentoring, yes… large group events are great, but perhaps they don’t know that they can get one on one help with their business plans at the Center for Entrepreneurship at BYU or they can get help at the Small Business Development Center.
I’m also guessing that the financial end of the business plan may be intimidating for women who are unfamiliar with how to create a balance sheet or represent their financial projections in a spreadsheet. This was also me! I had never done that before so again, getting help was critical for me.
Another problem could be lack of confidence in their idea. While they may want to do it, they may not think it is good “enough” to compete with it.
Where do we go from here? How can we increase the female applicants?
First of all, it’s the first time BYU has offered a Home-based Business Plan competition so it will take time for students to learn about it and want to participate, based on the success of the first one, I’m sure our numbers will increase overall.
I feel that we need to get into the colleges that have a heavier female population and give out fliers, see if we can get them excited about the opportunity
BYU already has a women entrepreneur lecture series (Here is mine from last Fall) however, the class was attended by a lot of Freshmen who may not be ready to actually dive into writing a plan at this stage of their college career. So, we need to reach the juniors and seniors, the MBA students… where are they and and how do we get them to see what they’re missing?
What ideas do you have?
Mrs. Utah Pageant Training: Chapter 1 (Reactions, My Core, Hair Extensions, and Zermatt Resort)

Reactions to My Decision to Compete in the Mrs. Utah Competition in May
After Monday’s 6am workout was over I broke the news that I was going to compete. I decided that I needed to “own” the experience in every way, so I announced it here, on Twitter (and yes, traffic has increased because of it), by email, by calling friends and family, and told a few neighbors. There were some raised eyebrows for sure and I’ve discovered “pageant” is a very loaded word filled with mixed emotions and opinions. I admit that I have reservations about it as well… (why must there be a swimsuit competition and what does that prove? etc.) but since I KNOW I’m supposed to do it, I’m putting my doubts and questions about it aside and moving forward with confidence and preparing seriously for it. In general my best friends have been overwhelmingly supportive and awesome about it, that makes me so grateful. Startup Princess readers and members have also been so wonderful and sent me many emails and comments which calmed my nerves and have encouraged me to keep moving forward. For those who don’t understand my decision, well, they’ve been respectful or silent, so that’s been good too… phew!
Sponsors
I was so excited when Startup Princesses Shabby Apple, Lemon Leopard, Today’s Mama, and Fabulash (eyelash extensions, so chic!), and Beth Graham Photography agreed to sponsor me for the pageant… we’re really trying to demonstrate that we have a supportive base of women entrepreneurs since my platform will be centered around that, so this is a great place to start. I’ll be contacting many more companies in the upcoming weeks… if you’re interested in trading advertising for product or for cash sponsorship, please let me know.
My Core
My pageant trainer and Startup Princess Fairy Godmother (Mrs. Utah 2004) Cherie Burton says that what makes you light up a room isn’t your dress, your make up, your hair, or any of that.. it’s your “core”, it’s who you are when you walk into that room. You are a walking advertisement for your life’s mission… It’s your confidence, it’s your feminine power and the way you can dominate with your passion, your joy, your love… it’s your REAL beauty. I’ve been thinking a lot about my core lately and writing about it in my journal, feeling and connecting to that inner beauty, my fears about my outer beauty/what I have perceived as flaws, and embracing the gifts inside and out that God blessed me with. I’ve enjoyed reflecting on this famous quote by Marianne Williamson:
“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.†Read more
Why and How I’m Competing in a Mrs. Pageant in May 2008
February 25, 2008
Surprised? Me too!!!!!!!! I never expected it, but it’s absolutely true. I AM COMPETING May 24th in the Mrs. Utah United States pageant. (See below for how you can show your support or sponsor me, I’d really appreciate it!)
WHY in the WORLD would I put myself through that
torture, opportunity? Two weeks ago Fairy Godmother Cherie Burton (Mrs. Utah 2004) called and invited me to consider the competition. At first I just kind of laughed about it and then she kept talking about all the doors that opened for her, all the people she is now connected with, the personal refinement, the motivation to get in shape, etc. I was intrigued– a teeny tiny bit. Then she mentioned the networking again (my weakness)… hmmm… for that reason alone I should do it I thought. But that wasn’t reason enough to get me on stage in a swimsuit (albeit a one piece with a wrap). She said, if you choose to do it… I could mentor you. I was flattered but not convinced. Then after the call was completed I received my WHY. It was a very strong emotional, exciting, and scary moment all at once… shaking me to my core. I just KNEW that I needed to experience the pageant and that much good would come out of it. So, in a nutshell, my underlining decision to compete stems from an inner feeling that it’s right, that God wants me to learn something from this. Now that I’m over the shock I’m excited about the potential growth for Startup Princess too… I look forward to sharing our mission with more women. And, yes, it is fun that our brand goes with the whole idea of winning a crown… I must admit, I really want that crown, an official one.
HOW in the WORLD will I “Make it Happen” in just 3 months?
To know me, you know: I believe in myself, and set my daily intentions so I create my own dreams, I’m a hard worker and I know the right people to help me…and if I don’t know the right people, then I find them. I have the right people in place now.
First of all, I feel that I have God’s blessing and encouragement. I will depend on Him daily for my support and ask Him to guide my efforts.
My husband, Matt bless his soul is completely supportive and is helping me to pay for the expenses of the entry fees, trainer, hair, etc. (but I’m seeking sponsors to help with my wardrobe). He is excited about what this will mean for our family, as we’re all eating better now and there’s a heightened attention to health in general. He’ll be my escort in my evening gown which I think is extra special! My kids are excited too… they’ve been exercising with me and we’ve been looking at hairstyles in magazines, etc. together… they’re great at giving me their opinions!
Fortunately, I know 3 previous winners, all Fairy Godmothers for Startup Princess… Mrs. Utah 2006 Continental Becca Levie, Mrs. Utah 2004, Cherie Burton, Mrs. Utah 2003 Kristen Lamb, all great friends of mine. Cherie is my pageant trainer and will be working with me on my strategy, platform, wardrobe, etc. and I’m sure I’ll be talking to Becca and Kristen a lot as well.
I also have a personal fitness trainer, Liz Rosenbaum, also a great friend and Startup Princess (she sold her company Keeping Memories Alive and Scrapbooks.com last year) is now starting a fitness training company, so I’m officially her first client and I couldn’t be happier. She’s very focused on results and I need that. She also lives 4 minutes away so on warmer days I could actually jog over to her house before our 6am training, if I get really ambitious!
When possible I will select my wardrobe and accessories from Startup Princesses and other women entrepreneurs to support them and model their creativity. I am looking for sponsors as well with my wardrobe. Email me!
What you might not want to know: I have already had 3 colonics (yes, 3) and believe me that’s a great way to clean yourself out before you attempt any diet program. I’ve been off refined sugar since January 5th (just because I hate the way it makes me feel) and now I’ve been off dairy, carbs, and pumping up healthy proteins, adding way more water, veggies, supplements, etc. I feel really great now just with my focus and attention on whole foods and exercising… can’t wait to see the results as things progress.
Also, if you didn’t know I have a performing background, having grown up in Burbank, I had the chance to be in lots of professional media opportunities, film, tv shows, modeling, theatre productions, etc. and my old days are all coming back to me… in the last few years I saw myself more of a director than a performer with my recent Master’s in children’s theatre, but I’m not afraid to “get into character” and shine!
Will I be blogging about the training, etc.? Yes and No. I will share some of my experiences on Mondays but as far as my strategy, platform (you all will love what I have in mind, promise), wardrobe, pageant secrets goes, I have to be very careful when and how I share until I actually compete because I may hurt myself by sharing too much. If you want to read about a human guinea pig experience with a Mrs. Pageant, click here.
What about Startup Princess?Good thing I followed my feelings to get things in order in January with this site… I pre-posted all of our Wednesday Fairy Godmother posts through August (thank you to everyone who submitted them early!) and Jessica Cryer now writes our Thursday features. Startup Princess news on Fridays will also continue, keep sending us your great news. As far as everything else goes, I’ll still put in a few hours here and there on email, events, and other programs, but I’m going to rely on my partner, Leslie Smoot a great deal and she’s very capable and awesome to run things when I have other obligations.
Ways YOU can support me:Wish me luck, pray for me, think of me when you’re eating Ben & Jerry’s :), and please attend and support me if you’re in town!Sponsor me and we’ll give 10% to a rewarding Startup Princess who wins our elevator pitch competition later in 2008
