Kids Books Teach “Systems”
October 31, 2006
Seven Silly Eaters is one of our family’s favorite books. It’s a delightful rhyming read with clever illustrations and a progressive story that helps reinforce the value of team work and systems such as E-MYTH. At first the young mom is capable of keeping up with her baby’s demanding warm milk routine, but then the next baby will only drink freshly squeezed pink lemonade…and then baby #3 only eats home-made bread and so on…pretty soon 7 children are demanding their own specific quirky meal, and as they get older, more and more of it. Eventually Mom is beyond frazzled, no longer able to practice her Cello, the place is a pig pen, and she drops dead into her bed every night (sound familiar? hmmm…) Then the kids wake up in the middle of the night and each try to make their own meal for Mom as a birthday present, but none of them know how to cook, so all of the “meals” end up in a pan and try to hide the evidence in the already warmed oven and they go off to bed to sleep until morning when Mom wakes up to find a perfectly pink and plump birthday cake (from the bread dough, the pink lemonade, the milk,…) And from that day forward they never eat anything different! And best of all, Mom is happy!
Today’s Magic Wand: Look for examples of “systems” wherever you’re at. You might be surprised what you learn. Check out another favorite systems kids’ book: The Country Bunny and The Golden Shoes

The Queen of Scream’s Spellbinding Business Comes to A Close
October 30, 2006
I’m a total scaredy-cat when it comes to The Rocky Point Haunted House in SLC (I’m not linking to their site because the trailer scares me and when you click on the site it automatically begins, be forewarned if you check it out). I went a few years back and that was enough for me. My husband however, is a groupie, he’s there tonight and will be there again tomorrow night after trick or treating…he loves it. From a theatrical stand-point, I was completely in awe of the elaborate Hollywood rented sets, costumes, make-up, and role-playing. I would go this year, if it was 10am and all the lights were on. I would walk through with The Queen of Scream, Cydney Neil and compliment her on how she’s succeeded in making her Haunted House a huge money making machine, voted #1 in The COUNTRY, get 50,000 visitors a day, donate thousands to charity, and provide jobs for many young people. And I would add how smart she is that when there’s a 2 hour wait she can get people like my husband to pay $2 more to go to the “express line.” Cydney Neil says this is “Final Fear, Final Year”, however, why isn’t she selling it to someone else? It seems like she could find a buyer, just not me!
Get a Website or Lose Out!
October 30, 2006
Last week I found a vendor that I’ve been searching for for nearly a year. I found them because they were featured in Hudson’s Children’s Wear Review and they listed their phone number. Previously all I knew was the company’s name which did not link to any sites in my google searches. In today’s internet based business world, people don’t have patience for looking for vendors.
Reboot Your Brain by John Reese
October 30, 2006
Start U
p King John Reese, Internet Marketing Pioneer is generously making a difference with his newly released “Reboot Your Brain” lecture/powerpoint. I spent about 2 hours this weekend doing the exercises and found them to be incredibly helpful and empowering. I experienced a great deal of relief regarding all that I want to accomplish, all that I dream, and all that I fear as I wrote until exhaustion (this is a handwriting exercise). Reese shows others how to literally “dump your brain on paper”, gives steps to mastering thoughts, prioritizing to do’s, overriding fears with a proactive approach, and turning desires into actions.
Thanks to Fairy Godmother Janet Meiners for the tip!
Today’s Magic Wand: Carve out 2 hours for some deep thinking and exploration with John Reese, You owe it to yourself, your family, your business, and your future! Check it out!
The Patience Project
October 29, 2006
For the past month I have been working on what I call “the patience project”. I am committed to becoming more patient in my life–with myself, with the stage that my businesses are at, with my family, and with those around me. In working on this characteristic I have found a few things helpful:
- Recommitting each day to be patient
- Studying uplifting scripture daily that demonstrate examples of others who are patient and striving to memorize key phrases that I can recall when I am facing a challenge with patience
- Surrounding myself with uplifting quotes and inspiration written on post it notes around my house
- Being aware of those who are patient in my life and trying to be like them
- Involving my family in my goal to become patient and be accountable to them each week and report my progress
- Evaluate my behavior throughout the day and rate myself on how I acted or reacted in a certain situation, not being too hard on myself, because I am making an effort
- Getting more sleep
- Eating healthy meals
- Going on walks, enjoying nature, writing in my journal, relaxing
When I am faced with a situation where I notice I am being impatient, instead of saying “I’m really impatient right now”, I try to say, “this is a great opportunity to exercise patience”. Not easy to do, but I am making progress, little by little.
Any other ideas of how to develop this key attribute?
When Someone Else Takes Your Idea First
October 29, 2006
Product development is super expensive and let’s face it, it is a huge risk.
In the last week I’ve seen 3 products on the market that I have considered developing myself and at first I was frustrated, but then I was completely relieved! They took the risk, now I can sell their product and see how it sells with my customers. If I like how it goes, eventually I can tweak it, brand it, make it better–if I want to make it “mine”. And if it doesn’t do well…then what a relief that I only had to place a small order and don’t have a warehouse full of them!
Today’s Magic Wand: Sometimes it’s a gift if you’re not the first to the market. Be peaceful about ownership of ideas and product development. It’s a competitive world and if you can buy someone else’s product before making your own, do it.
What Attracts You?
October 27, 2006
Fairy Godmothers Carrie and Danielle’s Friday Focus:
Pay attention to what attracts you. One of the most powerful questions you can ask is: What am I drawn to? – C&D’s Manifesto of Style
What makes you grin? Which colors make you feel up, or make you feel flat? What do you crave? What mysteries would you like to solve? And why?
Plenty of people are inspirationally challenged — not sure of what lights their fire, and wouldn’t know where to begin to name their favorite this or that. Others are so selective about what floats their boat that not much new can get past their preferences. Whether you’re confused or particular, curiosity is a terrifically enriching quality.
This week: write down three things, concepts, or subjects (not people) that you feel attracted to…the color red, bookstores, vanilla, fast cars, democracy. And ask yourself what’s so interesting, or soothing, or sexy about the things that you gravitate towards? Go with the first thing that enters your mind, no matter how silly or grandiose it may seem.
Being aware of not only what we are attracted to, but why we’re attracted to it, gives us access to the most tender and creative places within ourselves.
Carrie and Danielle create Style Statements for their clients and are currently writing a book. Visit their new blog.
Marketing That Never Quits
October 27, 2006
Don’t you get mad at commercials and slogans sometimes? Today I retreated to my jacuzzi bath tub for some R&R and I found myself telling the sitter, “Calgon, Take Me Away…” I probably haven’t thought of that slogan for years and somehow it came back to me in the moment that I wanted to run away and hide from my crying children and zone out. The beauty of slogans done well is that they become part of our culture and our language.
Guy Kawasaki writes in The Art of The Start that more than slogans, our very company names can become common place terms such as Q-Tip, Google it, etc. Now that’s powerful marketing. I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone ever say, just “Yahoo it”.
Today’s Magic Wand: Consider your favorite marketing campaigns and why they succeed. What can you learn from them? My favorite right now is Dove’s Real Beauty campaign. Their message is so inspiring it makes me want to support their effort. They have created workshops for girls as an outreach program that I hope changes the way girls think about themselves. Now that is one marketing campaign that I hope NEVER Quits.
