There are few different reasons why I started.

*I wanted to put all of my favorite products in 1 store.

*I wanted to save money. I get my kids clothing, toys, and furniture so much cheaper wholesale:)

*I wanted to have security.

*I just wanted something that was "mine" and want to feel accomplished.

I was a young mom and I'm really embarrassed to say, that i never actually had a real job.
Getting a real job and leaving my daughter at a daycare just was not an option.

Thankfully, I did not need to get a job. My husband was taking care of us just fine.

I'm very dependent on my husband.
What if god forbid something happened?
What if he got injured on the job and could not work?
What if he died?

How would I survive? All I have is a high school education and no job experience.

I loved shopping and spending money on things for my daughter.
But it was hard to find everything I wanted on one site.

So I created my own. Now with three kids, my inventory expands as my kids grow.

I was inspired to start my online retail store when I realized that there were very few options for professional women who wanted fabulous, professional bags. I believe that women not only have a place in the corporate world but can also look amazing on their way to the top!

For me starting my company came from a need I had after being diagnosed with gestational diabetes last summer with my second son. I being a styl-forward kind of gal I wanted a carrying case for my supplies to reflect that. When I couldn't find any anywhere, I designed my own super cute bag. Red leather and too cute polkas inside. After not seeing what I wanted anywhere I thought 'why not' then I thought I can't possibly do this on my own...but then I thought if not me than someone else will. So I jumped in and just got started. I've always enjoyed the idea of being my own boss and the idea of not worrying financially in the future is always a comfort to me, and being able to actually enjoy my sons growing is very important to me. So I guess starting this was two or three fold.

I started my online business because I saw a need in the marketplace for moms (and dads) to get rid of the growing amount of stuff they have accumulated during their kids' lives. Donating to a charity often leaves me wondering where they actually go. Throwing them away only adds to the growing environmental problem and my guilt. And finding someone in my neighborhood to take them is all a matter of timing. To me, matching my goods with someone who really wants them would make me feel good that my kids' cherished toys or even unused stuff will be loved. That was why I started Tots Swap Shop (totsswapshop.com). Its reach is not geographically limited and anyone (with access to a computer) can swap stuff at little or no cost. Thanks in advanced to those who are the first pioneers of this site!

I think at some point in your life you have got to think of new challenges and perhaps one that is entirely different. If you moved from one job to another in the same work industry what's the challenge.

My moment of clarity was when I was sent alone on an overnight business trip with short notice to do something I had little passion for. I have no kids yet, but my husband was also out of town so I had to take our two dogs to a boarding facility. As soon as I dropped them off and got in my car, I started to cry. I was overwhelmed with feelings of guilt and unhappiness. I felt like I was being forced to do something so out of comfort zone while leaving behind my "kids" and my home against my will. It was at that moment that I knew I had to start my own business. I knew I wanted to create a flexible working environment that allowed me to make my own decisions about my job and be with my future children as much as possible. I spent my entire trip brainstorming business ideas. Over the next six months, I worked tirelessly to come up with a way to reach my goal and wrote at least three business plans before eventually starting my own marketing and public relations firm, which today I operate full time. The whole process was somewhat surreal, but remembering those feelings and recognizing how they've helped me lay a solid foundation for my family still motivates me today.
