Start Up Princess Melissa DeMordaunt, Snugabug Baby recently introduced me to Kristy Glass, new member of the Start Up Princess kingdom. Kristy “plays a mom on TV and in print” and is one in real life. She has an impressive resume, including work in some of the most famous theatres in NYC. You can see her full resume here. I had the opportunity to interview Kristy as she’s competing to be the host of Real Savvy Moms TV show and she’s one of the top 5 finalists (they will select 2). Viewers get to vote and she wants you to see her fun video and consider her! I just watched all of the videos and I agree…she’s perfect for the part! Watch her video and VOTE! The competition ends April 29th.
Here’s the Start Up Princess interview with Kristy Glass:
Tell us about the competition and why you want to be the host of Real Savvy Moms:
This competition is for 2 new hosts of the television show produced by Real Savvy Moms. I am unsure where it tapes, but I know their staff is located in NYC. I want to be a part of it because it is the perfect marriage of my work and home life. I am in the “TV” business and I am a mother, and I am passionate about both, so it’s PERFECT.
As a model/singer/actress YOU are your “brandâ€, how is that?
I have a friend who teases me, and calls me “Kristy Glass Incorporated”. The great thing about being the brand is that you just be yourself. In fact, if I strayed from who I really am, I feel that my “brand” would never succeed.
How do you handle rejection?
It used to be very difficult on me. My lowest point was about 4 years ago when I experienced my first (and hopefully last) anxiety attack over not getting a part. I realized in that very scary moment that it was completely UNHEALTHY for me to get SO invested in any one job. I keep statistics on my work, and last year I booked 17% of my jobs, but I was always busy, had my highest earnings year ever, and I was happy, so even though I was rejected 83% of the time, it didn’t feel like that because now I just take it in stride. I leave the audition and forget about it. Having two demanding children helps, because I don’t have time to dwell on it.
Who watches your children when you have jobs?
Usually I hire someone I trust to babysit them. If it is a long day I usually hire someone who is past the teenage years to watch them.
What do they do when you go into the interview/audition? Have you ever lost a job because of a crying baby, etc.
When I bring them to an audition, which is most of the time, I ask someone who is also at the audition to watch them. Usually if someone takes interest in them, they will volunteer or I will ask them. I have been doing this for five years now, so the kids are used to it. They are very trusting which I like, but also fear because of stranger danger and all. Once my youngest pooped while someone was holding her and I was just so glad it didn’t leak out onto his white shirt. I have only had one bad experience with someone being uneasy with the baby. I wrote about it here . My philosophy is that if someone is going to discriminate against me for being a mother, than I am really not interested in working with them.
What’s been the best part of bringing them along with you?
The best part about bringing my kids along with me is when they actually help me to get the job. Many times I am up to play the part of a real mom, and when the casting director’s see that I am literally a mother, it helps them complete their vision. I also think it’s really great experience for them to go on adventures with mom all the time.
How do you see yourself as “an entrepreneur
I am an entrepreneur because I have to be creative about having a career and being the primary caregiver for my children. I am constantly having to juggle and be flexible in order to meet the needs of my entire family. Though I have a commercial agent now, most of the jobs/auditions I have gotten in the past 10 years, have been gotten without the help of an agent. This is where the business part of my music/business major has come into play. I have learned to be organized, network, and keep up my craft to the point where I am very bookable.
What are your goals for the next 5 years?
In 5 years I hope to have a legit agent (theatre, tv, film), and have more theatrical credits under my belt. I would love to be involved with a show or a pilot where I am the creative driving force. I would also like to explore some of my other interests which include POSSIBLY starting a children’s theatre in my neighborhood, POSSIBLY getting into directing commercials that involve child actors, and doing more volunteer work using my talents. And of course, I want to be further on my path of mastering motherhood.
What is your “magic wand tip†for other women entrepreneurs?
It sounds cliche, but it really is about following your passion. I also believe that YOU choose your life, life doesn’t choose you, so it is important to take those risks, follow those dreams and make your reality a place of energy, passion, peace, joy, achievement, and contentment. One of my favorite quotes, that I stole out of a book of questions is this: “Do you have enough risks in your life to stay alive?” My business is risky, raising children in the city is risky, and I have to say, I am feeling quite alive.

Kristy,
I LOVED your audition (and I voted for you)! You have a wonderful talent and come across as being a very real, likable, mom that is as overwhelmed as all of us! I wish you the best and hope you get the job!
Hey Heather, THANKS so much for watching…and voting. I appreciate it.
The voting is over…and unfortunately she didn’t win. I was so surprised!
Although I’ve just seen your interview a year later. You sound terrific.
Grounded. Positive. Look Great.
I was once where you are and tried juggling auditions, babies, baby sitters, etc.
I think, well I know now what I lacked the most was not the emotional and financial
support from my husband and kids, but the confidence which you have and I
certainly lacked will always shine through.
Regards,
Jackie
