20 Simple Ways You Can Be Happy, Healthy & Wealthy in 2011
January 10, 2011
Fairy Godmother Heather Allard of The Mogul Mom shares the following tips and advice:
The new year is here and each of us has a fresh start, a clean slate…a chance to be and do better.
But sometimes being a mom and an entrepreneur can make it tough to take advantage of the gorgeous white space of opportunity that lies ahead of us each January 1st, so I made a list of 20 simple ways you can be happy, healthy & wealthy in 2011.
1. Look ahead
Every year, my friend Laura Roeder buys a big ol’ Year At A Glance calendar and maps out the year ahead for her business – promotions, marketing, launches, everything. My friend Alexis Neely takes it a step further and creates a 12-month “life and marketing plan” so she can achieve the success that she wants without her business and her family life colliding.
2. More kettlebell
Christopher Walken might need more cowbell, but I need more kettlebell. Because my butt is no where it used to be ten years ago. Somehow I’ve gone from J. Lo to Spongebob and it’s time I got my booty back. I’m doing the “Perfect Posterior” workout from Tim Ferriss’s new book The 4-Hour Body because it’s quick & effective, uses only a kettlebell (mine’s 35 pounds) and takes just 30 minutes per week. Bonus: this workout firms way more than your butt – it tightens & tones your stomach, legs, shoulders & back too.
3. Become a sixer
Save time, save money and for Pete’s sake, stop staring into your closet each morning wondering what to wear. Simplify your life by taking part in the Six Items or Less experiment. If you’ve known me for a bit, you know this won’t be a big stretch for me, but I’m really looking forward to the chance to streamline my wardrobe even further.
4. Avoid the Benjamin Blindside
Download Daily Worth’s 2011 Money Planner so you have a realistic – and predictable – budget plan for the entire year. While you’re there, sign up for their daily email and become financially savvier this year.
5. Be in the (tech) know
You know that drawer full of shiny new gadgets you just had to have but have no idea how to actually use? Well pull ‘em out and head over to Digitwirl, the weekly web show that makes tech work for you. Get on the list to receive their weekly 3-minute (who doesn’t have 3 minutes?!) video that shows you how to use technology to make your life better.
6. Business or hobby? Pick one.
While watching the awesome “How To Failproof Your Business” video series by Naomi Dunford and Dave Navarro, they cracked wise about something I’ve been talking about for years - the difference between a business and a hobby. If you answer one question this year, let it be this –do you have a business or a hobby? Your answer will dictate everything else you do over the next 12 months.
7. Just because you can doesn’t mean you should…
Stop trying to be a one mom band. Instead, outsource your weaknesses & time sucks so you can focus on your strengths. Whether it’s accounting, laundry, grocery shopping or shipping, if it slows you down, get it off your plate. Earn extra points for outsourcing to a mom.

3 Wicked Good Web Stats Programs
October 13, 2010
Fairy Godmother Heather Allard of The Mogul Mom writes the following:
I’m a Gemini, which basically makes me highly inquisitive and on a constant “need-to-know” basis. I love analyzing things, viewing statistics and solving mysteries. That probably explains my love of CSI Miami–I think it’s so cool how they solve crimes by analyzing the smallest bits of evidence and figuring out how they all fit together.
As a blog author (and former ecommerce website owner), that’s also why I love website statistics, programs that show who & what’s going on your website or blog. I’ve been a Google Analytics user for years and I’m still a big fan–but recently, I’ve discovered Alexa.com and Clicky, two more web stats programs that are, in Rhode Island speak, “wicked good”.
If you own a website or blog (and I’m guessing you do), you need to check out the features & benefits of Google Analytics, Alexa and Clicky and how these web stats programs can help you with your business.
Features
- Analyzes traffic by visitors, traffic sources, content, goals & more.
- Customized dashboard–arrange only the information you need on your dashboard.
- AdWords integration–use Google Analytics to find out which of your AdWords are most profitable to your business.
- Easy implementation–place a small snippet of code into your website pages and tracking begins immediately.
Benefits
- Google Analytics is free.
- Google Analytics data like monthly page views, unique visitors and bounce rate can help you attract advertisers to your site.
- Knowing where & when your customers leave your site can tell you why you may be losing or gaining sales. It can also show you which content is most popular & which isn’t–that’ll help you tweak your content appropriately, giving your readers more of what they love, less of what they don’t.
- See who’s talking about you–GA’s “top traffic sources” will tell you who your top referrers are and can help you discover press coverage that mentions you and websites that are linking to you.
- Help you hone your AdWords-if you’re spending money on Google AdWords, Google Analytics will help you see which ones are earning you the best return on investment. In this economy, you’ll want to earn the most bang for your advertising buck and Google Analytics will help you do that.
Features
- Offers a series of tools specifically for web site owners. These tools can help to drive traffic, make money, find broken links and more.
- Shows the websites that link into your website.
- Gives your website’s traffic rank globally, by country or by categories like business, arts, sports, health and more.
- Compares stats from different sites.
- Has a search bar that allows you to “find sites about”–just enter any keyword.
Benefits
- Alexa is a free site.
- As with Google Analytics, knowing your Alexa traffic rank will help you attract advertisers. The lower your traffic rank, the better–being in the top 100,000 websites is the goal.
- Gives you the chance to compare & contrast your stats with your competitor’s stats.
- Shows you what sites are linking into your site–the more sites linking into yours, the better–that usually improves your Alexa traffic rank.
- Measures your traffic over a 3-month period and gives you a chance to see your progress, an especially rewarding benefit for hardworking mogul moms!
- Let’s you see what sites come up when you search on specific keywords–a great opportunity to uncover competitors and see how they rank.
Features
- Offers real time, highly customizable web stats organized by visitors, locale, content, links, searches, campaigns & goals.
- Tracks every visitor who comes to your web site with amazing detail, and shows all their history with one click.
- Offers on-the-go access to your data with an iPhone interface & generic mobile interface.
- Highly detailed, real time campaign & goal tracking.
- Offers five different plans, starting at FREE to $299.99/year.
Benefits
- Gives the most in-depth look at your visitors and what they’re viewing, clicking & downloading on your site.
- Extremely detailed traffic sourcing–tells you how your visitors got to your site, directly or by bookmark, links, searches, advertisements, webmail, RSS reader or social media.
- Affordable plans for every need.
- The real-time stats are perfect for the ultra-inquisitive person who doesn’t want to wait 24 hours for stats to update.
I enjoy using Google Analytics, Alexa and Clicky for very different reasons. For me, Google Analytics gives me the best numbers, Alexa gives me the best competitive insight and Clicky gives me the best way to really get to know my readers and find out what’s valuable & interesting to them.

3 Life Lessons I Learned From My Parents
June 7, 2010
DON’T LET REAL OR PERCEIVED HANDICAPS STOP YOU FROM ACHIEVING YOUR DREAMS
My father, Richard, was born with no fingers—just a thumb—on his left hand. His mother, Mary, insisted he learn how to do everything a “normal” little boy would do, like making his bed, buttoning his shirt and tying his shoes–no easy feat for a child with my dad’s disability. When his friends came to see if he could play, Mary would say he could play just as soon as he put on his shoes and zipped his jacket. Often, his friends tired of waiting and left before my dad had finished.
But Mary’s “tough love” paid off—my father learned to not let his disability stop him from doing anything. At a young age, he showed natural artistic ability, sketching and painting everything from dogs, boats and houses, to swirling, expansive modern works.
He played baseball, golf and tennis, and was a straight-A student at St. John’s Preparatory School in Massachusetts. He attended Catholic University, studied architecture at the Rhode Island School of Design and then received a Fulbright Scholarship to study abroad. He declined the scholarship and instead accepted a position at Robinson, Green and Beretta, an architectural firm in Providence, RI. In his early thirties, he became one of RGB’s chief designers and youngest vice presidents and showed amazing talent, designing things like St. Jude Church in Lincoln, RI and Schneider Arena at Providence College before dying at the age of 36.
The Lesson: Don’t let handicaps—real or perceived—stop you from pursuing and achieving your dreams—don’t listen to naysayers and never, never give up.
BE THE WIZARD
In 1972, my father died after falling and fracturing his skull during a friendly relay race at my 3rd birthday party. My mother, Valerie, was widowed at age 32 and left alone to raise me (3), my brother (8), and my sister (11). My mother had to quickly learn to do things she’d never done before—things like writing a check, balancing her bank account and finding places she’d never driven to on her own. These things sound simple to us now – but back in 1972, they were usually handled by the man of the family.
My mother has always been a strong, intelligent, independent lady, so learning new things didn’t take long. But she took one big life lesson with her: the more you can do for yourself, the better.
Since then, my mother has always taught us to be self-sufficient, to learn how to do as many things as possible, to not be like Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz—to not go SEE the Wizard, but instead, to BE the Wizard in our own life.
The Lesson: Learn how to do anything & everything you can—between books and the Internet, it’s never been easier to be the Wizard and to teach your children the same.
LIVE YOUR LIFE WITH NO REGRETS
About 10 miles from us, there was a man named Brendan, a widower with a 5 year old daughter. He belonged to the same country club that we did and a mutual friend set my mother and Brendan up on a date. It wasn’t long after that that they decided to get married, not because theirs was a whirlwind love affair, but because they had a common goal: to provide a loving, nurturing, safe life for their children–us. My mother and Brendan were married in 1974 and honeymooned in Bermuda.
My life was never the same after that and I will forever be grateful to the man I came to call my father–he was as “real” as the Velveteen Rabbit.
Brendan was a handsome man, a hardworking man and the smartest person I’ve ever known. He received his undergraduate degree from Providence College and went on to graduate Magna Cum Laude from Fordham University with a Masters in Economics. He knew literally everything–he was a human encyclopedia with a powerful vocabulary. He had the Irish gift of storytelling and he made any party more fun. He worked as a salesman for a Massachusetts steel company and worked his way up over the years, finally retiring as company President at the age of 71.
He was a kind man, an unbelievably generous man. He loved me, my sister and my brother as if his blood was running through our veins. He provided for us, put us through school and took us on more family vacations than a sane man should have. He was funny and sweet and the best father a girl could ask for.
Brendan died 5 years ago from a short but devastating battle with kidney cancer. He died at home, surrounded by my mom and the four of us kids. He had lived a full life—he was well educated, had traveled around the world and had achieved great professional success—yet the thing he felt most fortunate about was that he had the one thing he’d always dreamed of—a big family. He died at 78 years old with only one regret, which he shared with my mother about a week before.
He said, “I just wish we’d taken the kids to Bermuda with us on our honeymoon.”
The Lesson: Do everything you’ve ever wanted to do. Say ‘I love you’ every chance you get. Know that it’s never too late. Live each day to the fullest, without regret so when you reach the end of your life, you will truly be at peace.

Time Is Money
May 3, 2010
Fairy Godmother, Heather Allard writes:
A few weeks ago, I received 3 of the same fortune in 1 fortune cookie. It said: “Time is money”
I found it mildly amusing and wondered if that might be my “theme” for 2010. And then yesterday, “time is money” really hit home for me.
I arrived 5 minutes early for my 9am hair appointment and sat in the waiting area. I could see that my stylist was already busy and frankly, she looked panicked when I arrived.
15 minutes went by and she said, “I’ll be right with you, Heath.” So I waited.
Another 15 minutes went by and she said, “I just have to rinse this lady’s color off and I’ll be right with you.” So I waited.Another 15 minutes went by and she said, “I just have to dry this woman’s hair and I’ll be all yours.” So I waited.
At 10am, she called me over. 1 hour later than my scheduled appointment. But it gets better.
For the next 4 hours, my stylist flew around the salon between me and about 6 other clients like a chicken with her head cut off. I did not leave the salon until 2pm.
I had been there for a total of 5 hours. That’s right, 5 hours.
“Heather with the hair” so they know to block out double the time it takes to do a normal person.”
I have very thick hair and a ton of it – it does take a long time to do my hair, but not 5 hours.
I really like my stylist – she’s funny and gives great hair. She’s also 5 minutes from my home and charges about half the price of the salon I used to go to.
But I’ll tell ya, sitting there for 5 hours on Saturday really got me thinking about how true “Time is money” really is – and, I think, doubly so for mom entrepreneurs.
For mom entrepreneurs, our time is usually divided two ways – precious, priceless time spent with our children and productive, profitable time spent building our business.
(PRECIOUS PRICELESS PRODUCTIVE PROFITABLE) TIME IS MONEY
I was then reminded of Danielle LaPorte’s recent “Stop Doing List” and thought, man, this “time is money” thing could even be reworked to:
“Time and energy is money”
And then I flipped “time is money” on its head and made it:
“Money is time”
Because MONEY paid to someone else to do things for you gives you TIME to do the things you love doing, whether it’s reading a story with your kids, going to dinner with your husband or dreaming up a new design for your clothing line.
So, I decided to make a list of all the things that I could STOP doing or START paying someone else to do to free up my time – precious, priceless time to spend with my 3 amazing children (and 1 amazing dog, The Dude and 1 amazing husband) OR productive, profitable time spent building The Mogul Mom (look out – 2010 is going to be huge!).
Here’s my list so far:
1. Instead of spending 2-3 hours grocery shopping each weekend, I’m going to use PeaPod and Alice to
do it for me. Cost: $10 PeaPod delivery charge Time saved: 156 hours or 6.5 days per year
2. Instead of spending hours, even days sometimes, on writing sales copy, I hired someone to do it for me. Cost: $250 Time Saved: 12 hours (a modest estimate)
3. Instead of spending hours each day frantically checking new email that arrived in my inbox, I uninstalled Gmail Notifier and freed myself from the false sense of urgency it creates. Cost: $0 Time Saved: 2 hours each day
4. Instead of manually replying to each email I receive asking me for referrals to manufacturers, I created a Gmail “Canned Response” with all the information prepared and ready to send. If I wanted to get super-duper efficient, I could create a Gmail Filter that looks for the words “can you please recommend a manufacturer” and automatically sends the Canned Response I created. Cost: $0 Time Saved: 30 minutes each time I receive one of these requests.
5. Instead of spending 30 minutes here, 2 hours there on email and social media, I’ve set office hours to bring structure to my day and more white space to my schedule. Cost: $0 Time Saved: minimum of 2 hours per day or 730 hours per year.
Now, Danielle suggested that women stop dying their hair but I’m not quite ready for that. BUT – what I could do is schedule the FIRST appointment at my hair salon so I know she won’t be behind
schedule OR find a new salon that doesn’t overbook or multitask.
I want YOU to examine your daily and weekly activities and find at least ONE thing you could STOP doing or START paying someone else to do and then post it in the comments below. Be sure to tell us how much time you’ll save doing it.
Time is money and money is time. How much is yours worth?

How to Get Your Product to Stand Out: What’s Your Point of Difference?
September 10, 2009

The following post is by Fairy Godmother Heather Allard, The Mogul Mom:
Today, my brother Sean emailed me to ask what I thought about a new business he’s considering–baking & selling all-natural dog biscuits.
He loves dogs, has worked with dogs, and last year, purchased a dog biscuit recipe book and began experimenting with different ingredients & focusing on all-natural biscuits inspired by his own dog Aidan’s food sensitivities & skin troubles.
So I Googled “all natural dog biscuits” and came up with 303,000 results. Clearly, there are already a lot of all natural dog biscuits on the market.
Does this mean Sean shouldn’t give it a try?
No, it just means that he’ll have to go into the venture knowing exactly what his point of difference will be. In a nutshell, point of difference is the way in which your product differs from a competitive product.
Wikipedia says that “because of an overwhelming variety of products and services on the market, those that stand out in some manner are better noticed by consumers. There are various (positive and negative) ways of being different compared to competitors in the same market. Differentiation is the term given to the positive way in which a company’s product differs from its competitors. Points of difference (PODs) describe the individual factors of differentiation.”
Point of difference is an important consideration if you sell a product that has serious competition, as in my brother’s case. Some points of difference that Sean can weigh are:
- Price
- Variety
- Features (all natural, exotic ingredients)
- Benefits (eases indigestion, aides weight loss)
- Availability (number of stores that sell his biscuits)
- Convenience (free shipping, auto replenishment)
- Customer service (assistance in purchasing, gift wrapping)
This afternoon, I received an order from Sephora and there were a few samples that I’d selected included with the items I purchased. One of the samples was a product called “No Frizz” (Frizz) made by a company called Living Proof. I opened up the sample packet and read the story behind No Frizz and was immediately struck by how clearly they defined their point of difference. Here’s what it said:
No Frizz is a collection breakthrough, anti-frizz products invented by Living Proof scientists. Formulas that contain the first new frizz control technology in over 30 years! With more than 1,000 frizz fighting products on the market today, just about every one of them tackles frizz the same way–Silicone. The problem is it’s ineffective at addressing the causes of frizz. Silicone coats hair with oil, allowing humidity to penetrate — leaving your hair limp, greasy and full of frizz.
Living Proof scientists set out to cross frizz off the list once and for all. They developed a new molecule that creates an extremely thin barrier on hair and eliminates the two causes of frizz. Water vapor is prevented from penetrating the hair shaft and friction between hair fibers is significantly reduced — resulting in a truly effective anti-frizz action.
So what’s No Frizz’s point of difference? Innovation–they’re the first company in over 30 years to come up with a new way to tackle frizz. They even developed a new molecule to do it, giving No Frizz major “cool” factor. I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait to bust open my sample and try it.
Here are some other companies that I think do a great job of establishing their point of difference:
- Wal-Mart–lowest price
- K9 Cuisine–organic dog food and fast, friendly, free service
- Zappos–massive selection and free shipping & returns
- Mom4Life–only mom-made products & free shipping
Well, what’s your point of difference? Let me know.
