Introducing Heather Barnard of Chickadee Prints
December 3, 2009

It’s always exciting when I get to know a Startup Princess pre-launch and get to follow their journey post-launch. Heather Barnard has been a pleasure to follow and watch in action, with lots of energy and enthusiasm. I was touched as I read Heather’s answers in her interview, she’s a tough chick, so it’s appropriate that her online stationary business is called Chickadee Prints! I also really like how they appeal to all the twitter users with their tagline “Sharing Your Tweetest Moments”. Be sure to check out the adorable selections, loving the mommy calling cards and great holiday choices!
Enjoy getting to know Heather Barnard of Chickadee Prints!
-Kelly King Anderson, Startup Princess Founder

Professional Background: In my post graduate professional career, I’ve done two things: I was an elementary school teacher, teaching 2nd and 6th grades, and then an inspiring entrepreneur!
What you wanted to be when you grew up: A mommy to a lot of kids!
What you are: A mommy to 3 wonderful children ages 16 mos, 3.5 yrs., and 5 yrs., a wife, and a mompreneur
Brief Summary of your Start Up: Chickadee Prints offers beautiful stationery for almost any occasion, printed on high quality cardstock which is FSC certified because we care about our environment. Company Website? www.chickadeeprints.com
What inspired you? I was inspired by other mompreneurs! I saw that they were achieving dreams they had, and knew that I could do it to.
How long have you been in business? I started under a different name three years ago on a VERY part-time basis, with me alone, and doing everything custom. It wasn’t working.
How did you fund it? We didn’t have much to put down at once to build it all, so we slowly put what money came in towards it, and over a year, we finally have what we need.
Do you have a Fairy Godmother (or Mentor)? I have so many people who have supported me, helped me, and stood by me. Everyone from Julie Cole at Mabel’s Labels, to Allyson at Ladybugs and Lullabies, to my biggest fans…my step-mom and my husband.
Do you belong to any Business Organization or Networking Groups? Startup Princess
Current Business Challenge? Marketing
What are you doing about it? I have joined with a few PR companies to spread the word, and I am a social networking butterfly! I am on Facebook and Twitter which has opened a lot of doors, even before opening!
Favorite motivational quote: “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. You’re on your own, and you know what you know. And you will be the guy who’ll decide where you’ll go. Oh the places you’ll go.” OH, THE PLACES YOU’LL GO! Dr. Seuss
Family? Yes, I have 3 children.
If so, how do you balance family and business? It’s hard! When I’m working from home, I feel guilty because I should be with my children. When I playing with my children, I feel guilty because I should be working. The best thing I’ve figured out is to have an actual office in the home, where the door can close during business hours. And to set those hours firm, so that business can end, and family time can begin. We have also made sure to have a bi-monthly date night set in stone, and weekly family night, also set in stone. This helps me to make sure that neither the business nor the family falls short of the other.
Favorite book? Goodnight Gorilla
What do you do to relax? Right now, I haven’t found a lot of relaxing time…but we try to take family vacations to major decompressing at least twice a year. On a smaller scale, for me, just getting out of the house to go grocery shopping is relaxing since I’m on my own, and not thinking about the business.
What do you want to change most about your world? I want my world to be filled with a more understanding and compassionate people. I feel that there is still too much daily judgment on everything from religion to skin color to sexual choice to material items. It creates a lot of stress.
What are you most proud of? I’m most proud of never giving up. I lost both parents by the age of 17, I could have easily given up. I’ve been through a miscarriage that could have been a roadblock for me, but I’ve overcome. And most currently, I am most proud of getting through the tears and frustrations of trying to launch this business, and finally getting it up and running.
What advice would you like to offer other Startup Princesses? Simply…don’t give up! Have you seen the movie Meet the Robinson’s? Just ‘keep moving forward’.
Favorite Magic Wand (tool/resource)? The Internet! As funny as that might sound, the Internet has been such a wonderful wand for me! The resources I have found through networking, have been amazing, presenting lots of opportunities for me.
If you could design a tiara, what precious stones would you use? A Sapphire, an Emerald, an Alexandrite, and a Blue Topaz…the stone of my children.

Favorite book? October Sky, a very inspirational story. I love reading memoirs!
What do you do to relax? Spend time with family, watch movies, web design.
What do you want to change most about your world? I want to push for greater acceptance of organic and natural products and remedies. There are too many harsh chemicals and ingredients in things we use and consume. Natural is better for us and our world!
What are you most proud of? First, my son. Second, I am proud to help support my family while watching my son grow and learn each day. I never wanted to miss out on those special moments, and now I don’t have to!

What advice would you like to offer other Start Up Princesses? If you want something, go for it! Never give up! And always, always allow time for yourself! You deserve it!
Favorite Magic Wand (tool/resource)? StartupPrincess.com. I am so glad that I came across Startup Princess. I don’t feel alone anymore! It has led me to bigger and better things for my business. I have loved connecting with women I met through Startup Princess.
If you could design a tiara, what precious stones would you use? Diamonds! Not only is it my birthstone, but they are “a girl’s best friend” after all!
Introducing Allison Czarnecki of Petit Elefant and Social Luxe Lounge
September 26, 2009
I met clever mom, visionary, fashionista, event planner and professional blogger Allison Czarnecki of Petit Elefant early January 2009 via email. When decided to meet up for lunch we realized that we lived in the same neighborhood! How fun is that? Quite a rarity to find a cool blogging chick in your backyard. I’ve enjoyed reading Allison’s blog this past year and getting to know her better. Here’s a few of my favorite recent posts by Allison: her post after Touchpoint about Heather Bailey and running for Blogteam President, her tribute to her Grandpa, eyeshadow post on Design Mom, and about meeting “Nie Nie” Stephanie Nielson.
When I met Allison she impressed me with her ambition to take things up a notch in 2009 and it’s been a joy to see her over the past year do just that! This year has been a whirlwind for Allison– lots of conferences, traveling, blogging events (Mom 2.0, Blogher, and TJMaxx event…to name a few). She spent 3 weeks on the road with her family this Summer sampling wonderful hotels, excursions, restaurants, and more and sharing them with her readers at Petit Elefant and if that weren’t enough she also was one of the masterminds behind the highly successful Social Luxe Lounge at Blogher where they had over 700 attend and attracted top sponsors such as Swiffer, Kodak, Lego and more. Allison has boundless energy, vision, determination, and is inspiring to watch. She is super talented forming partnerships with key individuals and companies to make her wishes come true. -Kelly King Anderson, Startup Princess Founder

Meet Abbey Fatica of Living My MoMent
August 8, 2009
Abbey Fatica always knew she wanted to be a mom. When her first child was born, she searched for a way to stay home, and along the way discovered a passion for helping mom entrepreneurs. With the economy struggling, she wondered how she could help mom entrepreneurs start, run and maintain successful businesses in the midst of it all. She founded Living My MoMent, a site that allows mom entrpreneurs to advertise and promote their businesses for free. In just four short months, Abbey already has over 200 mom-owned businesses advertising on her site and it continues to grow every week. Without further ado, we introduce you to Living My MoMent’s founder, Abbey Fatica.

Hometown: Cincinnati, Ohio
Current Residence (City, State): Columbus, Ohio
Education: I have a M.ED in School Counseling and a M.A in Psychology
Professional Background: I was in school for most of my life before becoming a Mommy and really just had internships and worked in restaurants. It wasn’t till I became a Mom that I started working for myself.
What you wanted to be when you grew up: I wanted to be a School Counselor but most importantly a MoM and once my kids are in school I might go back to working in the schools. We’ll see where life takes me.
What you are: I am a Mom, Wife, owner and creator of Living My MoMent, bartender, mom entrepreneur, and friend
Brief Summary of your Start Up: When I became a mom, I knew that I really wanted to be able to stay home with my kids as long as I could and be able to raise them. So after my daughter was born, I began my search for some way to make money at home and I wasn’t coming up with anything that quite piqued my interest.
I really wanted to start my own company making something but again I was at a loss for what to do. I had a lot of different ideas but nothing that came to fruition. Then in April of 2009, I saw Heather from Dooce.com on Oprah talking about how she makes a living writing a blog and I thought it was a great idea.
Now, I just had to come up with an idea that I was passionate about and knew that I would want to do for a long time. With the economy as bad as it has been, I wondered how small businesses were keeping up with the times. That’s when it occurred to me, Wouldn’t it be great to help other moms out that run small businesses?
Living My MoMent was created for mom-owned businesses. I would allow them to advertising their product or business on my website for FREE! This would help expose them to another potential market and hopefully it would grow their business.
Company Website? http://www.livingmymoment.com
What inspired you? I was inspired by other Moms who were running their businesses and still staying afloat even though the country is going through some rough times. Their passion and love for their product is what keeps me going everyday.
How long have you been in business? April 2009
How did you fund it? There weren’t many start up costs for this website.
Do you have a Fairy Godmother (or Mentor)? I can’t really think of one person, but many of the mom businesses that I have worked with have given me great advice!
Do you belong to any Business Organization or Networking Groups? I belong to social networking groups such as Facebook, Twitter, Work it! Mom, Mom Entrepreneur, Mompreneur Café, Twitter Moms and Mommy Millionaire
Current Business Challenge? My current challenge is figuring out how to build my website and bring in more traffic to website through marketing in different venues. I am still very new at this and am learning something new everyday.
What are you doing about it? Through networking with other moms, I have learned many different sites that I can market at, do interviews through, and improve my SEOs. I love hearing what other people are doing to market their product to others
Favorite motivational quote: I don’t really have a motivational quote, but something that I have been living by throughout this whole process is: if you love what you do the money and financial gain will eventually come. Have a passion for your company and others will want to come and see what you are up to.
Family? My loving and supportive husband, John and I have been together for 10 years and married for 3 of those 10. We have a 18 month old spunky daughter named Luci and are expecting our 2nd in December. We also have a 5 year old neurotic Sheltie named Shelly.
If so, how do you balance family and business? My daughter is a great sleeper and still takes a 2.5-3 hour nap during the day, so 5 days a week I can work while she is napping. Sometimes, if I still have projects that I need to accomplish I can do then when she goes to bed. I make sure that Saturdays and Sundays are family days and resting days. I love what I do and I have learned from past jobs that you can’t focus completely on your business because then you will get burned out. Having a weekend off can refuel me for the upcoming week.
Favorite book? I am huge Harry Potter fan, but right now I’m into reading pregnancy books again!
What do you do to relax? I love watching reality tv, especially shows on the Food Network and HGTV. I also read to relax and play with my daughter.
What do you want to change most about your world?
I’m very happy with what is going on with my world at the moment. I would love to continue to get the word out about Living My MoMent so that it can grow into something big. I want to be able to help as many mom-owned businesses I can and it can all start with me.
What are you most proud of?
I am so proud that I am able to stay at home and be my own boss. I love that I don’t have to deal with the daily grind and can watch my daughter evolve in to such a great little person. Even though, I went to college and got two degrees, I always knew that being a mom and raising my children was my ultimate goal and now I’m able to do it.
What advice would you like to offer other Start Up Princesses?
Remember to figure out a way to balance your life. You don’t want your business or your family to struggle without you. Make sure you save some time for yourself and Love what you do!
Favorite Magic Wand (tool/resource)?
My new favorite resource is actually one of the mom businesses that I advertise for and that is The Work at Home Woman by Holly Hanna. She has given me great advice for starting up my own businesses and actually I would have never thought about doing interviews for sites if it weren’t for her suggestions.
If you could design a tiara, what precious stones would you use? Diamonds are definitely a girls best friend, but I would also use the birth stones of the months of each of my family members.
Would you be interested in being a Fairy Godmother and writing articles or speaking at Startup Princess events? Yes
What business subjects would you feel comfortable mentoring in? Advertising your small business, balancing life and family, and blogging
