Professional Background (brief, please):

What you wanted to be when you grew up: Carol King

What you are: I am an Audio/Video/RSS Specialist, focusing on Podcasting.

Brief Summary of your Start Up:
I started creating Encouraging Audiobooks because I wanted to create family friendly audio content to encourage lonely or discouraged people around the world. From there, I started an audiozine (and ezine that offers links to audio articles). Podcasting came along and I found out I was already doing most of what it entails, so I moved my content to an RSS feed and began blogging and podcasting. From there, I was hired by Lifetime Television for Women to teach them about Podcasting and produce a 5 week podcast series with Martina McBride.

Company Website? http://www.1stPodcastPublishing.com

What inspired you?
Listening to Audio Books that had unpleasant surprises after I purchased them. I couldn’t play some in front of my children, and I wanted a site of audio books that were completely family friendly.

How long have you been in business? Almost 3 years (since April 2004)

How did you fund it?
Line of Equity against my pre-marriage residence which is now a rental house.

Do you have a Fairy Godmother (or Mentor)?
I have a business coach that I respect who did a fantastic job helping me combine all of my businesses into one site. Her name is Mary McDonald, from http://www.MCDCG.com (McDonald Consulting Group).

Do you belong to any Business Organization or Networking Groups?
The International Virtual Women’s Chamber of Commerce (http://www.IVWCC.com), Digital Women (http://www.DigitalWomen.com), and I am the leader of the Ryze Podcaster Central Network (http://Ryze.com)

Current Business Challenge?
Keeping up with all of my projects. I have finally narrowed down my target market, my primary business, my favorite things to do, and what I’m best at, and am restructuring to point all of my projects in that direction. I give a LOT of free classes in order to introduce myself to other organizations. I never know who might be interested in any of my services or products, nor who they know that might be interested.

What are you doing about it?
I’ve hired an assistant with some research for a project, and I have a Health and Fitness Coach (Gillian Hood-Gabrielson, http://www.HealthierOutcomes.com), who helps me stay less stressed, balanced, healthy and fit (and lose about 60 more pounds – with her I have gone down 1 size without dieting!). I’m also learning to better schedule everything, since my calendar is getting so full. Not answering every single email as soon as it comes in is another trick I am trying to master!

Favorite motivational quote: I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

Family? Husband, son just started college, daughter just turned 16, 3 month old puppy, 6 month old puppy, and a new baby girl puppy coming this week.

If so, how do you balance family and business?
Hehehehehehe. My husband would say I don’t. My daughter might say I do. I do all of the grocery shopping, cooking, cleaning, laundry, take care of my daughter, the puppies, and work on my business full time. It got messed up this week due to some problems, and I feel stressed from it. But if I schedule it right, it all gets done. Friday mornings are hopefully exercise and then cleaning, followed by an online Christian Women’s Gathering. That is my biggest challenge of the week – but my Gathering is the motivation to finish my cleaning! <smile> I also try not to work on Friday nights, Saturday nights or at all on Sunday.

Favorite book? The One Minute Millionaire (for business). Personally, either Oswald Chamber’s biography, “Abandoned To God”, Hannah Hurnard’s “Hinds Feet On High Places” and “Mountains of Spices”, or C.S. Lewis’ “The Great Divorce.”

What do you do to relax?
Play with the dogs, listen to my daughter talk about her high school day, and watch Friends. I never saw it first time around, so it’s all very new to me. I bought the entire series for Christmas for myself. <smile>

What do you want to change most about your world?
I want to be healthy physically, spiritually and emotionally. I am slowly getting there, with help from coaches, counselors and online women friends. I really don’t have many in person friends, since my entire life is virtual.

What are you most proud of?
My children. They turned out so well. You always fear that you might have messed them up with all of your own mistakes in life, but they turned out well in spite of me. My son graduated a year early from high school, and has just started working, driving and going to school. My daughter is beautiful, intelligent (you have to be if you have ADD and still make good grades!), and has a great singing voice and dramatic flair. They don’t smoke, drink, do drugs or have pre-marital sex, and they know how to make good, sound, moral decisions. That is what makes me most proud.

What advice would you like to offer other Start Up Princesses?
It will take at least 3 years for your business to get solid. If you don’t love what you are doing, you will probably burn out before then, because you will not necessarily be making a real profit until then (if you’ve had to invest money in your business). So do what you absolutely love, and would do for free. Also remember that most millionaires have failed miserably and even gone bankrupt at least 3 times – so if you fail, then just tell yourself that you are one step closer to being a millionaire! Also, it’s just a numbers game – expect 3 No’s for every Yes you get. Lastly, the people that succeed are not the people who get there first, or get it right first, but the people that keep on going. So no matter what, don’t quit if you truly feel you are called to do what you are doing. But don’t continue to do something that you really aren’t called to do.

Favorite Magic Wand (tool/resource)?
Skype, because it keeps me connected to people all over the world.

If you could design a tiara, what precious stones would you use?
I don’t know much about gems, but I love mother of pearl and diamonds.

Would you be interested in being a Fairy Godmother to another woman entrepreneur? (I am working on a secure system to do this, any ideas?)
Yes, I would, if it was not too time consuming. I think a 1 hour a week mentoring program would be good, or maybe in small groups.

What business subjects would you feel comfortable mentoring in?
Business Resources, especially free ones. When you are starting out, it would be great to know of all the things that are available that can help you.

Would you be interested in going to lunch with other women entrepreneurs for a “networking tea party”?
Yes, if I KNEW other women in my area. I will soon due to my new local business, so perhaps it would work then.

If you are out of Utah County, would you be willing to be a facilitator of such an event?
Possibly.

Startup Princess is an international network committed to empowering Women Entrepreneurs by offering resources for women in business to support, mentor, collaborate, learn from, and inspire one another.
