Brief Summary of your Start Up: Wasatch Woman Magazine is all about making connections. During the early years in Utah, there was a magazine for women. It gave them an opportunity to talk about important issues and stay connected. But, that magazine disappeared in the 40s, and we haven’t had anything like it until now.

What inspired you? At first it was the idea that we could do something good for women in Utah. That of course has continued to be inspirational, but so has the mere challenge of trying to pull off a new publication in a difficult market.
How long have you been in business? Just over 2 years.
How did you fund it? Personal money, loans, credit cards … not what I’d recommend.
Do you have a Fairy Godmother (or Mentor)? No
Do you belong to any Business Organization or Networking Groups? Ladies Who Launch, SLC Chamber
Current Business Challenge? Becoming profitable
What are you doing about it? Cutting back costs, focusing on sales
Favorite motivational quote:
“Whatever you do, or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius and power and magic in it.â€
Goethe
Family? I have 3 beautiful children. Kenzie is 9, Caleb is 6, Josh is 2. My husband, James, stays home and takes care of them.
If so, how do you balance family and business?
It’s one of the most difficult parts of running a business. We try to do something together for fun at least once a week. They get up and spend family time with me each morning before I leave for work. And, I try to plan one-on-one time with each child at least once a month.
Favorite book? I love to read, so I have many favorites. But, I recently read The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls. It’s a great book of perseverance, strength, and family.
What do you do to relax? I read. I don’t go to sleep at night without picking up a book first. And, if I’m spending TV time with my husband, you’ll often catch me reading during commercials. Reading is my escape … it gives me time away from the stress of a full-time job, a business, and a family.
What do you want to change most about your world? I want women to be more accepting of themselves and each other. We’re so hard on ourselves and that hardness sometimes spreads to the judging of others. If we’ll work together and support each other, this world would be so much gentler, kind, and beautiful.
What are you most proud of?
I am most proud of just making it through. It’s been a tough two years. That goes with the territory of starting a business. I’m proud that I haven’t given up on dreaming. That I still have ideas and the desire to see them to fruition.
What advice would you like to offer other Startup Princesses?
Believe in yourself. You can do anything that you’re willing to work and fight for. And, when the fight goes out of you, do that thing that helps you recharge and then go to bed. You’ll find that the fight is back the next morning.
Favorite Magic Wand (tool/resource)? Girlfriends
If you could design a tiara, what precious stones would you use? Peridot and Diamonds
