Brief Summary of your Start Up: I recently took early retirement after 20 years doing marketing communications, writing, and PR for American Airlines. I created a plan, designed some business cards, and launched The Word Express, offering editing, writing, and research for upscale travel and business magazines, and Websites. The first Monday of my retirement I received a call to do some editing for a business magazine, and I was in business. I’ve been busy since day one!

What inspired you? wanting to regain control of my time and income
How long have you been in business? 1 year
How did you fund it? savings, but not a lot of capital was needed as I provide a service rather than a product
Do you have a Fairy Godmother (or Mentor)? My mom, who was a schoolteacher, always told me “You can do anything you set your mind to†– and I believed her.
Do you belong to any Business Organization or Networking Groups? NAWBO, local networking groups
Current Business Challenge? whether to diversify and seek out new clients
What are you doing about it? Investigating the market.
Favorite motivational quote: Whether you think you can or you think you can’t – you’re right. (I think this is from Henry Ford, but need to confirm if necessary.)
Family? husband, dog and cat, one daughter and one granddaughter, who are my inspiration to do my best work
If so, how do you balance family and business? Deadlines are crucial in my work, but family comes first, so I’ve learned to plan accordingly and not over commit.
Favorite book? Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, and Emily Dickinson poetry
What do you do to relax? garden, read, Sudoku, yoga
What do you want to change most about your world? My little world or the big world????
What are you most proud of? my family; turning a degree in English (I can still hear my mom saying “What are you going to do with that?â€) into a creative career
What advice would you like to offer other Start Up Princesses? Make a plan and take action. You can do it if it’s important to you.
Favorite Magic Wand (tool/resource)? networking, and deep breathing to clear your head
If you could design a tiara, what precious stones would you use? my birthstone — emerald — and diamonds of every color
