Kmart Offers Great Design, Uses Social Media and Wins a Customer

While I was hanging out over at Design Mom I found Gabrielle’s photos of her recent trip to the Sears Design Summit. I enjoyed seeing the images of Kmart’s new home decor lines–truly stunning and interesting.  There’s hope for cost-effective home decorating on a budget. Incidentally I randomly

found myself at Kmart a couple months ago to buy some Pokemon cards and a little Spring outfit caught my eye, it was really unique in pattern and design.  I bought it wondering if I had made a poor choice because I didn’t know how it would wash up and whether it would have been better to have paid more somewhere else for better longevity, but I was not disappointed. I wear it all the time and get a lot of compliments too.  Now, with the promise of more cool apparel and home items, I’m encouraged to give Kmart another try soon…especially after watching the fascinating videos about the new NYC design team they’ve assembled.  I watched all of them. I especially loved this one with the designer and her daughter who is nurturing her own creative gifts. I hope they produce more videos about the design process.  It would be awesome if on the tags of the clothing they had a little profile piece with “Designed by Susan” with a link to her bio and a video of her designing.

This experience reminded me how much I love companies who are embracing technology, social media, video, blogging, etc.  How amazing that Kmart’s design team is on twitter too.  I feel like I could share an idea and someone would care.

How is embracing social media helping your business? For us, Twitter gives us 33% of our website traffic, so yes, it’s helping–immensely. I use Twitterfeed to alert Twitter followers of new posts and sometimes I use Tweetlater if I want to share news about an event, etc. Video has also been helping us this year, we have uploaded several videos this year and I feel that when people see how our events are online then they are more prepared and excited to attend one in person…or to reach out to us in some way.

What has been your experience?
