Janet Meiners, Affiliate Flash
Name: Janet Meiners
Hometown: Bountiful, Utah and Keizer, Oregon.
Current Residence (City, State): Orem, UT
Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Conservation Biology, Brigham Young University
Professional Background (brief, please): I was a web developer for 4 years, then a marketer. The past two years I have been focusing on Internet marketing. I was the online marketing manager for Tahitian Noni International. I’ve planned several events and write professionally.
What you wanted to be when you grew up: a mom with 12 kids (I’m not sure what was I thinking).
What you are: An internet marketer, entrepreuner, and writer.
Brief Summary of your Start Up: I started Affiliate Flash to help new affiliates find quality information about the industry. I interview successful affiliates, review ebooks and resources. I also report on the industry. I founded U|Tech Conference to teach people about internet marketing and how it can benefit their businesses. Many companies either don’t understand or don’t know the potential boost internet marketing can be. Advertising online is ideal because you can track everything and test whatever you do. It’s also relatively low cost.
Company Website? www.AffiliateFlash.com and my blog newspapergrl.wordpress.com
What inspired you? I was the director of marketing for a small company. I hired an internet marketer to help us market our web site. We talked about it all of the time and I started to read everything I could get. I’ve been passionate about it ever since. I especially like affiliate marketing, a kind of internet marketing. There individuals who are making a lot of money online. I know some of them. It motivates me.
The affiliate marketing industry is still new. There is so much innovation. There are a lot of personalities and it’s very dynamic. There is also a lot of opportunity too. It’s sort of like riding another tech wave.
How long have you been in business? 3 months officially but I’ve been working on it unofficially for about a year.
How did you fund it? Credit cards and contract work. I also trade when I can, especially with more technical work. U|Tech will have a subscription model to capitalize on the content from great speakers. I hope to do a series of conferences each focusing on different online marketing techniques for businesses.
Do you have a Fairy Godmother (or Mentor)? My friends Eric, Chuck, and Paul are always there to answer questions. I don’t have someone actively mentoring me yet. I’d like to find a woman who understands the balancing act that we often perform as moms and business owners.
Do you belong to any Business Organization or Networking Groups? Yes RMAMA (Rocky Mountain Affiliate Marketing Association) and WOMA (Wasatch Online Marketing Association).
Current Business Challenge? I hope to find more magazines to get my articles published in. Another challenge is the unpredictability and lack of health insurance.
What are you doing about it? I’m trying to find the right contacts at Utah Business, Salt Lake Magazine, Revenue, etc. I also work a day job for the insurance and steady income.
Favorite motivational quote:
I don’t know who said it but I love the quote: “Fear is the enemy of creativity.”
When I’m afraid of failure or even the unknown I can freeze up and forget all I know. When I go hiking and I’m slipping my first tendency is to stiffen up. What I need to do is relax, think straight, and stop the fall. In business it’s the same. Marketing is like confidence. Don’t doubt yourself. It’s impossible to be creative and solve problems when fear overwhelms you. When this happens I focus on all that I have and remember to be thankful. Then I go to work and get beyond fear.
Family? I’m a single mom to one little boy who’s starting school this year.
If so, how do you balance family and business? It’s not so much a balancing act but a juggling act. There are always some balls that fall. It’s something I think about often. I’m not really sure how to do it but I learn I can’t judge myself by other people’s standards.
Favorite book? I can’t choose. I really like nonfiction and I read a lot. The last book I loved was “Never Eat Alone†about networking.
What do you do to relax? I love to cook, eat and talk with a group of friends. I also like to do yoga because it makes me focus on just one thing.
What do you want to change most about your world? Make more time to unwind and relax with my son.
What are you most proud of? I’m a professional writer and got into a magazine I respect this year. I’m also proud of being a mom.
What advice would you like to offer other Start Up Princesses? Save up at least a year’s worth of income before you quit your day job. Blog about the journey. It will make you friends and become a creative outlet for you.
Favorite Magic Wand (tool/resource)? I use the Internet for everything. I love Bloglines so I can read a bunch of blogs from one web site.
If you could design a tiara, what precious stones would you use? I think I’m out of my element here. I’m not that girly. I grew up with 4 brothers. Since my birthstone is a garnet, I’ll think I’ll choose it.
Would you be interested in being a Fairy Godmother to another woman entrepreneur? (I am working on a secure system to do this, any ideas?) Someday I’d like to mentor other single moms.
What business subjects would you feel comfortable mentoring in?
Would you be interested in going to lunch with other women entrepreneurs for a “networking tea party
Yes — after work hours.
