Inexperienced in Business? Attach Yourself to A Pro

images.jpgToday’s Magic Wand: The Law of the Spider by Professor Gary Rhoads, BYU Marriot School of Management, Marketing Dept. says that if you don’t have the skills yourself, attach yourself to those who do! I’ve been doing this for 2 years. It works, I tell you. Surround yourself with those who “get it” who’ve “done it”, those who believe in you and will mentor you…and you’ll be in business soon enough. Gary says everyone can do this by getting a great, experienced Advisory Board. They don’t have legal obligations to your business so their advice can often be very truthful and helpful, not to mention their expertise can help your business get funding, press, sales, etc.

Do you have a good story to share about this principle?? Did someone else teach you a skill you need? Or did you outsource? Tell us your story of how you live “The Law of The Spider.”

I am a private person, so I initially had a hard time with this concept. Sharing my business and vulnerabilities was difficult for me, but I agree that it is well worth it to find a mentor. I currently have two or three people that I would consider mentors- one is StartupPrincess Heather Ledeboer- and I ask each of them unique questions based on their business expertise. Not only has it helped my business grow faster, but it also has helped me maintain my sanity.

Start Up Princess, Jamie, Good for you! Heather’s taught a lot of MomEntrepreneurs from her success. ;) I’d suggest you find a mentor in the clothing industry as well who has found national distribution, you could eventually go that route, if you wish…

Everyone has weaknesses and lack of experience in certain areas, so finding someone with different ones is very wise.

Is the law of the spider.? “The fly will suffer the spider to eat it.” The fly is the mentor?

Today is the last day of national mentoring month, so if I haven’t eaten my fly yet. I better do it today!

Got something to say?
