Meet Shannon Watt of The Business of Marriage

January 7, 2012

I met Shannon for the first time in the summer of 2011.  She is fun, personable, smart, and above all her passion to help dedicated entrepreneurs grow businesses without sacrificing their marriage is wonderful.  We see it all the time.  Women who are excited to start a business and then 6 months in are wondering why their marriages are in shambles.  Well, you can have both, and Shannon is committed to your success!  I’m excited to introduce you to her!

Name: Shannon Watt

Location: Salt Lake, Utah

Education: Northern Arizona University

Professional Background: I’ve been a serial entrepreneur for almost 20 years. My 5th grade teacher predicted I was too independent to work for someone else, and she was right! My husband has always been a performer, and eventually transitioned that into being a successful public speaker. I was initially terrified to ever be on stage, but with his encouragement, and some training, I’ve joined him in the movement to revolutionize marriages and reverse the divorce rate around the world. I’ve know done over 100+ trainings, and successfully mentored almost as many couples into creating more purpose, passion and play in their relationships.

What you wanted to be when you grew up: When I was younger I wanted to be a fashion designer or marine biologist.

What you are: Relationship Expert that speaks, mentors and writes on strengthening marriages, especially for women entrepreneurs.

Brief Summary of your Start Up:  I’m the creator of the Making Love and Money training series. As a trainer, speaker, mentor and body language expert, my passion is to assist women to infuse more purpose, passion, and play in their marriages while achieve equal success in their business.

Where you are located: Mostly on the internet, but I have an office in Sandy, Utah

Company Website? www.TheBizofMarriage.com www.makingloveandmoneywork.com

What inspired you? Watching too many of my friends, colleagues and clients lose their marriages in the pursuit of their career dreams. It hard for me to watch people become successful, at the expense of their relationships when I know there’s a way to be fulfilled in both areas of your life.

How long have you been in business? My husband started the Marriage movement for couples in general back in 2007, and I joined in about 2 years ago, and have now created my own programs specifically to support women entrepreneurs in their business.

How did you fund it? Bootstrapping from our own earnings and savings.

Do you have a Fairy Godmother (or Mentor)? I’ve had many mentors along the way. Right now Michelle McCullough has helped me with learning how to foster sponsorship relationships for my live events.

Do you belong to any Business Organization or Networking Groups? I am a part of the Utah Business Experts, Biz Divas, The Hub, and The Art of Business

Current Business Challenge?  Expanding my reach to married, successful women entrepreneurs on a global scale.

What are you doing about it? I’ve switched the bulk of my trainings from live events to on-demand video trainings so it’s instant deliverable, and globally accessible.

Favorite motivational quote: I have binders full of them, but the one that resonates with me currently is: “Want to promote world peace? Go home and love your family.” Mother Teresa

Family? Yes! I’ve been married to my best friend, Dino, for over 17 years, and I have 3 amazing kids that are the light of my life: Hannah 14, Avery 12, Hayden 11.

If so, how do you balance family and business? With short, concentrated, but powerful one-on-one time with each child, usually 2-3x a day. Having 3 kids in 3 years, I learned early on that I needed to be conscious in giving each of them some of my undivided time, everyday. When they were young, I implemented “Snuggle time” at various sections of our day. First, we have a tradition where the kids come in our room in the morning and climb in bed for a 3-5 minute hug, back scratch, “good morning” time. Then I try to schedule my work day to be home when they get home from school, so I can make them a snack and snuggle on the couch and hear about how their day went, and connect while they are unwinding from school. We have a standing rule that if anyone asks for some “special time”, I will stop what I’m doing and go talk to them in my room, and the other kids are not aloud to interrupt. This provides a safe place for them to share what’s going on in their world, what they’re feeling, ask sensitive questions, etc. Last, and most important, we make sure to go upstairs every night and have a family inspirational moment, family prayer, and give each child some quality alone time to share their highs and lows from their day, and what they want to create the next day.

By having these 2-4 points of contact with my kids, I stay in tune with them, no matter my busy schedule. If I’m traveling, I can do much of our routine over the phone so they don’t feel my absence as much.

Favorite book? I have too many to name just one, but I love personal development books, biographies, and non-fiction. I read novels only while on airplanes or vacation!

What do you do to relax? Naps! I also love to read, especially soaking in a bath. I enjoy massages, nature walks, going to the movies with my husband and letting my girls paint my toenails.

What do you want to change most about your world? More patience and acceptance of myself and my family. There’s a fine line between striving for excellence, and surrendering to what is, and let it be… it’s a balancing act.

What are you most proud of? That my husband and I have been serial entrepreneurs, working closely together for almost 2 decades, and we haven’t strangled each other!~ we still enjoy working & playing together.

What advice would you like to offer other Start Up Princesses? Get training and systems in place in your marriage and home first, so your husband and family will support the growth of your business, and not be torn apart by it. There’s nothing more heartbreaking than seeing a woman achieve her business goals while simultaneously getting a divorce. There’s a way to have them both be amazing!

Favorite Magic Wand (tool/resource)? The internet + Mac products & apps = bliss.

If you could design a tiara, what precious stones would you use? Diamonds, because the transformation from ordinary to extraordinary happens under pressure and time, kind of like business & life.

I’d love to gift my fellow princesses with a free 4-part video training on relationships~ you can find it at www.maritalrevolution.com

Meet Dana Lardner of Words To Sweat By

December 12, 2011

Over the last 18 months, I’ve made some big changes in terms of exercise and health, and I’ve lost 40 lbs. I still don’t love exercise, so when I saw this fun line of exercise gear, I smiled.  It’s totally me.  I’m even buying a towel for myself to put in my own stocking.  Enjoy! – Michelle

Name: Dana Lardner

From: California

Education: B.A. in Comparative Literature

Professional Background (brief, please): 12 years in technology and consulting in a variety of roles: object-oriented programmer, business analyst, technical writer, instructional designer, and web development project manager.

What you wanted to be when you grew up: Anything that took me on an adventure to foreign lands.

What you are: Designer and manufacturer of motivational fitness and health products.

Brief Summary of your Start Up: Words to Sweat by™ are functional fitness and health accessories with mantras that motivate you to reach your health and fitness goals. Why workout with a boring, white gym towel when you can use Words to Sweat by™?

Company Website?

Products: http://www.wordstosweatby.com

Business blog: http://www.whimsicalwalney.com

What inspired you? Staring at the countdown on the elliptical machine or the treadmill is something almost everyone avoids by throwing their towels over the display. It’s those last five minutes that get the best of us and that’s when we need motivation most so I thought, why not add a mantra to the towel so that someone could focus on that instead?

How long have you been in business? Whimsical Walney, Inc. was founded in 2004 and launched with a line of outdoor blankets, shirts, and additional whimsical items for children.

Due to the requirements and costs associated with the passing of the CPSIA, I made the difficult decision to stop manufacturing products for children in May 2009. At the time, it appeared I would have to close the company, but the need to continue creating something lighthearted and useful was too great so I changed my focus to motivational fitness and health products for adults.

Do you have a Fairy Godmother (or Mentor)?

No, I currently do not have a mentor but there have been many people throughout my career whose lessons I still carry with me today.

Do you belong to any Business Organization or Networking Groups? I do not currently belong to any groups of this nature. Because mine is an online business, most of my networking is done online.

Current Business Challenge? It has been much more difficult than I thought it would be to find the quality of production resources that meets my needs.

What are you doing about it? I have been working with community organizations that can connect me with people who may not look for work in a conventional fashion (online, or want ads, etc.).

Favorite motivational quote: That one is tough because my business is comprised of motivational quotes! A friend recently reminded me of one she uses, “because I can,” and I have always liked that one. I think we should all remember to celebrate how capable we are of achieving our goals.

Favorite book? I enjoy reading too much to choose just one favorite, but The Count of Monte Cristo has always been at the top of the list.

What do you do to relax? Getting outside in almost any capacity helps me relax. One of my favorite things is playing outdoors among the redwoods; that always does the trick.

What do you want to change most about your world? I would like to feel more comfortable not being able to plan for certain aspects of owning a business. I accept a level of uncertainty, but with some things there’s just no telling what will happen no matter how much you try to plan and that always makes me nervous.

What are you most proud of? I am most proud of taking the lemons that CPSIA gave me and making a whole new kind of lemonade. A large part of starting my own business was to have an outlet for both my business and creative sides. Instead of living in the frustration, I stepped onto the treadmill to clear my head and think of how to use the materials I had on-hand to create something new. While I may not have come up with an idea that will help me work through my fabric stash, I came up with a business that I can build and grow.

What advice would you like to offer other Start Up Princesses? There are many paths that can bring your business to the same place therefore don’t be too concerned if the one you thought was “the answer” isn’t the path you take.

Favorite Magic Wand (tool/resource)? The internet is a powerful tool. I use it for everything.   I like the simplest of tools – taking a deep breath that fills the lungs.

If you could design a tiara, what precious stones would you use? Off the top of my head, my tiara wouldn’t use precious stones, but instead a mixture of tourmaline, smoky, and other quartz. I like the earthy nature it would create.

Meet Payal Kadakia of Classtivity.com

November 23, 2011

I love it when I hear about successful women who have impressive degrees and are using their book smarts, street smarts, hobbies and talents to build successful businesses!  Payal is impressive.  Take a minute to learn about her and learn some of her secrets to success!

Name: Payal Kadakia

Education: Bachelor of Science degree in Management Science, Operations Research from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

Professional Background: I’ve been student of dance since age three…and I guess I have always been a “dancetrepreneur.” It was my passion for dance and entrepreneurship that led to the founding of Classtivity.com. As a student at MIT, my commitment to dance merged with my entrepreneurial spirit when I started an Indian Fusion Dance Troupe. Flash forward to life in New York City, where I founded the nationally-acclaimed Sa Dance Company in 2009. I quickly led the company to achieve tremendous community support, sold out performances, celebrity endorsements and positive reviews in The New York Times and prominent South Asian media. Prior to founding Classtivity, I worked as a consultant at Bain & Company and in Warner Music Group’s Digital Strategy and Business Development Group. Today, I am the CEO and co-founder of Classtivity.com.

What you wanted to be when you grew up: On Broadway! Or, something performance related.  When I was in 3rd grade and was asked to create something that resembled who I was, I created a popsicle stick dome that had a stage and ice skating rink called “Payal’s Palace of the Arts.”

Brief Summary of your Start Up: Classtivity is a free, one-stop marketplace and the most comprehensive online hub for classes and activities, Classtivity offers thousands of experiences, from spinning and martial arts, to golf and trapeze lessons. Classtivity eliminates the frustration of surfing multiple websites, which typically results in abandoned searches and unmet challenges. As a central hub for classes, Classtivity helps consumers take the first steps in discovering or rediscovering their hobbies and passions, based on key factors that are important to them, including neighborhood, time, class difficulty and descriptions.

Where you are located: New York City, in the heart of Times Square.

Company Website: www.classtivity.com (Don’t forget to sign-up for a beta invitation here: www.classtivity.com. Why?  Because finding a class shouldn’t be harder than taking one.)

What inspired you?  I’ve always had a drive to change the things I saw could be improved and one of the biggest things in my life I’ve felt lucky for was having a passion.  I want other people to never give up their hobbies and the things they love outside of their jobs, families, careers.  Whether its pursuing an old passion like singing or music, or finding something new, it shouldn’t be hard to do.

How long have you been in business? I founded Classtivity in February 2011, shortly after leaving my corporate job and taking a two-week rejuvenation trip to Argentina!

How did you fund it? Bootstrapping and some great friends and family!

Do you have a Fairy Godmother (or Mentor)? My dance teacher, Usha Patel.  She’s always been like a second mom.

Do you belong to any Business Organization or Networking Groups? No formal affiliations but very involved in women empowerment through organizations such as WIE (Women: Inspiration and Enterprise) and Women 2.0. I am also closely in touch with my professional and education networks at Bain & MIT.

Current Business Challenge? And what are you doing about it?  Recruiting exceptional tech talent.  We’ve been utilizing our deep network of contacts and posting jobs online thus far. Hoping to find the right fit soon.

Favorite motivational quote:  “The best day of your life is the one on which you decide your life is your own. No apologies or excuses. No one to lean on, rely on, or blame. The gift is yours – it is an amazing journey – and you alone are responsible for the quality of it. This is the day your life really begins.” Bob Moawad

Family?  I have two wonderful parents who dedicated their lives to me and my sister.  I also now have an adorable nephew who is the recent addition to my family.

If so, how do you balance family and business?   I come from a background where family is important and no matter what, it will always be a priority. I talk to my mom once a day – she is my support and inspiration on a daily basis.

Favorite book? Memoirs of a Geisha

What do you do to relax? Dance and listen to music, occasionally watch Seinfeld!

What do you want to change most about your world? I wish days were longer so I could do more things each day!

What are you most proud of?  Selling out three shows at The Ailey Citigroup Theater in New York City with acclaimed film director, Mira Nair, as our guest speaker and one of our most avid supporters …that’s a close second to starting Classtivity!

What advice would you like to offer other Start Up Princesses? Build a team of people who are as passionate about the business as you are and also who you trust. That is an ideal combination for success.

Favorite Magic Wand (tool/resource)?  My new MacBook Air.

If you could design a tiara, what precious stones would you use? Pearls, they were once only created by chance.

Meet Michelle McCullough, new Managing Director for Startup Princess

October 11, 2011

Startup Princess is excited to announce that Michelle McCullough is the new Managing Director for Startup Princess.  Kelly will still be active in our community, run #startupchats (every Wednesday from Noon to 1 Mtn on Twitter) & be part of the direction and strategy for Startup Princess with Michelle.  Michelle will assume a larger role than her current position as Business Development Director, which she has been since 2008.  She’ll continue to manage partnerships, sponsorships, affiliates and events in addition to her new responsibilities.

In addition to Startup Princess, Michelle is the owner of Doodads Promotional Products and is a speaker and business strategist.  Please welcome her to her new role and connect! Enjoy her interview.

Professional Background:  I’ve spent the last 14 years in marketing, advertising and sales working in all aspects of the industry. I’ve worked for advertising agencies, a television station, started a newspaper and worked in sales for a large corporation.  I love balancing traditional and emerging tools to share a message.  I also started Doodads Promotional Products when I was 19.  It’s still a growing, viable company and it’s just one way I fuel my entrepreneurial spirit.  I speak for corporations and organizations about marketing, advertising, sponsorships, and public relations (and love to give a motivational speech here are there).  I love helping entrepreneurs fulfill their business dreams and help them take their businesses to the next level, whatever that is for them.  I’ve been with Startup Princess since 2008 as the Business Development Director managing Startup Princess partnerships, sponsorships, affiliates, and events.

What you wanted to be when you grew up: A lawyer

What you are: Speaker, Strategist, Success Coach, Serial Entrepreneur

Brief Summary of your Start Up:    I’m a speaker, business strategist, personal success coach and a serial entrepreneur.  :) I may have come into Startup Princess when it was 2 years in, but I still consider it as one of “my” companies. :)

Company Website: http://www.startupprincess.com

Personal Website: http://www.speakmichelle.com

What inspired you: When I was in High School and College I was on the debate team.  It was something that I loved and I excelled.  I was always disappointed that there wasn’t a professional debate team like there was professional baseball or hockey.  I told myself I’d be a professional speaker someday.  My favorite thing to do is speak to audiences large or small.  I’ve also LOVED marketing since I took my first marketing class in High School.  Everything that I do today is virtually throwing speaking and advertising in a blender and out comes Startup Princess! :)

How did you fund your businesses? Bootstrapping

Do you have a Fairy Godmother?  Lots of amazing people have mentored me along the way.  But my most recent coach and dear friend Tiffany Peterson has been really instrumental in helping me develop since I met her 1 year ago this week through Startup Princess!

Do you belong to any Business Organization or Networking Groups? Startup Princess, BNI, Chamber of Commerce, The Hub

Current Business Challenge? Growing at a comfortable speed.

What are you doing about it? I’m remembering that raising my family is more important that growing a business.  Though I certainly believe they can co-exist, I’m very careful to ensure that my family doesn’t feel like they are being sacrificed in order to be successful in the business world.  That doesn’t mean that I always do this well, but setting my priorities and shifting them from my family to my businesses (and vice versa) takes a lot of planning, and day-to-day intuition.

Favorite motivational quote: Oh boy.  So many are swimming in my head.  I’ll share this one for now: “That which we persist in doing becomes easier to do.  Not that the nature of the thing itself has changed, but our ability to do has increased.”  Ralph Waldo Emerson

Family? Married to my best friend, Aaron.  We have two high-energy and highly-adorable toddlers ages 3 and 1.

How do you balance family and business? Like I said above, balancing family and business is an “act”.  I don’t believe life balance exists.  I believe we have to have a system of figuring out our priorities and know when to shift one into the first position and when to shift another back.  I have a system I use called the Life Priority System.  It’s a role based system that focuses on the things I want to be rather than the things I have to do.  It’s why I created the Life Balance Myth Workshop.  I’ve spent years of research and talked to a number of professionals trying to find the secret.  Now that I’ve found what works for me and other women I work with, I’m trying to share it with the world!

Favorite book?  The Success Principles, by Jack Canfield

What do you do to relax? Read a good book (fiction and non-fiction), scrapbook, watch an 80’s movie, spend time with my family and friends.

What do you want to change most about your world? I want people to be kinder and happier.  I want my kids to grow up being nice and treated the same in return.  I truly believe in the philosophy “Givers gain”, and wish more people believed in that as well.  I think the world, especially the business world, would be a lot better off if we all tried to give a little more and take a little less.

What are you most proud of? Running 3 businesses AND raising a family.

What advice would you like to offer other Start Up Princesses?  Grow at your own pace.  Stop comparing yourself to others or thinking that someone else has the “secret” to running a business and having a thriving personal life.  They are all trying to figure it out, too.  As I have coached women entrepreneurs over the last 3 years, I’ve found that more often than not, problems in business are because they are struggling to find balance.  They are often working too much, working too little or spending their time on the wrong activities that should be trashed or delegated.  My advice is to do what’s best for you and your business in your current stage in life regardless of what your competitors or friends are doing.

Favorite Magic Wand (tool/resource)?  The 2 G’s: God and Google (Kim Flynn planted that in my head and now I couldn’t possibly think of any other favorite resource.)  I rely on both daily.

I’m excited for this new chapter with Startup Princess and look forward to many great opportunities ahead.  If we haven’t met already, I hope to meet you at a live event someday!  Until then, let’s connect virtually.  Follow me on twitter @speakmichelle, find me on facebook here and at my personal website http://www.speakmichelle.com

Meet Susan Henderson, Founder of Suetables

October 6, 2011

Hometown: Toronto

Education: BAH in Communications from Queen’s University

Professional Background: For over 10 years, I worked in television as a Director of Communications overseeing the PR launch of Canadian specialty channels in Canada like – Life Network, HGTV, Food Network, National Geographic, BBC Canada, BBC Kids and more. In 2005, I turned jewelry design as a more personal means of expression.

What you wanted to be when you grew up: Dog trainer.

What are you? Entrepreneur with a not-so-well trained dog. I am the owner + designer at www.suetables.com, an online jewelry business with eight reps who hand stamp jewelry and run their own businesses. Suetables is where customization meets trend at a reasonable price.

Brief Summary of your Start Up: Before I started Suetables (www.suetables.com), I hunted for vintage silver spoons. When friends had babies, I learned, painstakingly to hand stamp these uneven surfaces with steel-like nails with letter/name impressions. They made personal and unique gifts. Learning this art, inspired me to hand stamp jewelry. I started with one “letter necklace” with my sister’s kids initials on it. My sister loved it and everyone wanted one. People kept asking me, “what else do you have?”

After selling hundreds of only ONE necklace, I started a line of hand-stamped personalized sterling silver jewelry long before anyone else was doing it. I hope to have a rep/”mompreneur” in every North American city one day.

Company Website? www.suetables.com

What inspired you? After my second child, I decided to stay home. But, I craved creativity, something to call my own and a job that provided flexibility. I was mad with desire to have something MORE. I stayed up at night surfing for ideas. I feel so blessed that, in the end, my hobby turned into a business. Sometimes the answer in life is right in front of you. It took my friends to show me.

How long have you been in business? Almost six years.

How did you fund it? Personal line of credit. I never bought more inventory that I could afford.

Do you have a Fairy Godmother (or Mentor)? I respect and bounce ideas off many business people – including my clients. I talk to fellow entrepreneurs. Sometimes, I email an entrepreneur out of the blue and ask them for coffee. Networking really helps inspire ideas.

Do you belong to any Business Organization or Networking Groups? Yes, I have been working with Mogul Mom, Heather Allard with an online networking group of entrepreneurs. Heather is truly an inspiration. http://www.themogulmom.com/heather-allard/

Current Business Challenge? Building online sales and finding a like-minded US reps to help me build the business.

What are you doing about it? I am hiring someone to help me with SEO (search engine optimization) and re-building my web site so it is easier to order, navigate and has a search-engine friendly template.

I am also going to go hand stamp sterling silver jewelry at gift and trunk shows in the US – grass routes style. That is how I built my business in Canada. That is how I found my eight Canadian reps. Like an Avon rep, Suetables’ reps run their own companies, buy silver upfront and work with clients to create the perfect mix of charms that reflect what the client loves. Our reps don’t just sell an item to someone – they learn to hand stamp and they help create it. It is the perfect business for a mom that craves something MORE but also wants flexibility.

Favorite motivational quote: “Life is like email. Delete the spam; act on the important messages; laugh at the funny stuff, then pass the best parts on to your friends.”

Family? is everything. I am a daughter, sister, girlfriend and mother to two wonderful wiggly boys.

If so, how do you balance family and business? I don’t think you ever arrive at the perfect “balanced” place. It is a constant journey of creating checks and balances.

Favorite book? A Short Guide to a Happy Life by Anna Quindlen

What do you do to relax? I walk the dog in the ravine, go to Pilates, art galleries, read magazines or watch movies. And I take a bath every day.

What do you want to change most about your world? Mother Teresa said, “the problem with the world is that we draw the circle of our family too small.” I’d like to teach my boys that we need wider circles. In the short term, if I can teach them to let my boyfriend’s daughter and son into their hearts, then I can teach them, in the long run, to find room to expand their heart and thinking to accept and have empathy for all kinds of groups. You don’t have to work for United Nations to do the noble work of drawing bigger and wider circles.

What are you most proud of? I’m proud that I am making a living doing what I love with a product that celebrates life and loved ones. I am proud that I am creating those opportunities for other moms through my rep growth model. I am proud that am am re-building my life. I am proud of my two boys. They have taught me how to keep on loving even when I am tired, scared, frustrated or angry. Did I say tired?

What advice would you like to offer other Start Up Princesses? When you start a business, you are often doing everything yourself and you work alone. Find someone who believes in you and your product and is willing to take the time to strategize and discuss ideas with you. My boyfriend has been an incredible inspiration, daily support and travel companion on my designing trips to various corners of the world.

Also, to build a business, you have to take risks. You WILL make mistakes and that is OK.

Favorite Magic Wand (tool/resource)?cMy Apple computer and Website Magazine (a great resource for online businesses!)

If you could design a tiara, what precious stones would you use? Crystals. They are one of earth’s most common minerals but they are so rich in many ways. They are beautiful and they have healing powers. For holiday 2011, my boyfriend and I are traveling to Czech to add crystals to my jewelry line.

What do you want to change most about your world? I’d adjust my level of patience. I come up with a thousand ideas a day, and I want to see all of them come to fruition all at once. I’ve got to learn to pursue ideas one at a time and in order to give them adequate focus.

What are you most proud of? Achieving my Masters degree and becoming a business owner by age 22!

What advice would you like to offer other Start Up Princesses? Always remain passionate about your ideas. Never become discouraged. You are the best advocate for your business or service– Consumers thrive off of your passion!

Favorite Magic Wand? Online small business communities and forums. There are tons of people with the same questions as I do. I love logging on to different business forums and learning from other owners who face the same challenges as I do.

If you could design a tiara, what precious stones would you use? Diamonds of course!

Thanks, Rochelle!

Meet Jeanette Bennett, Founder of Utah Valley BusinessQ & Bennett Communications

August 15, 2011

Jeanette Bennett is an amazing woman entrepreneur.  She’s the editor of over a dozen magazines!  Even as print media seems to loose market share to electronic publications, she manages to maintain growth and keep up with the times.   I was SUPER impressed to learn that when Jeanette needs to get ahead, she works from 4-7 AM before the kids get up and the phone starts to ring.  That’s impressive! I bet I’d get more done if I did that, too!

We’re excited to have Jeanette as a speaker & discussion group leader on Thursday of Touchpoint. (Early Bird registration ends today [8/15/11].  Secure your full 2 day conference pass for only $199.)

Name: Jeanette Bennett

Location: Orem, Utah

Education: Bachelor’s in journalism and master’s in communications (both from BYU)

Professional Background: Instructor at BYU-Idaho, copy editor at the Deseret News, writer/editor at Utah Business Magazine, writer at New Era Magazine, founder of our publishing company in 1998.

What you wanted to be when you grew up: Broadcast journalist

What you are: Print journalist, writer, editor

Brief Summary of your Start Up: I became an entrepreneur when I became a mother. My husband and I created a national newsletter in 1998 for high school journalism advisers as a way for me to make an income from home. We put $5,000 on a credit card to print and mail sample newsletters to every high school in the country. Before our credit card bill came due, we had enough orders to pay the bill without incurring any interest. This newsletter (Scholastic News Service) was a good side business but not a livelihood, so we added a full-color magazine — Utah Valley Magazine — two years later. We sold our home and used the equity to print the first issue. The next 11 years have been a rollercoaster of starting more than a dozen magazine titles — some of which have succeeded and others that became lessons in what not to do.

Company Website: uvmag.com; bennettcommunications.net; jeanettegazette.com

What inspired you: I’ve always been inspired by the idea of informing myself and then sharing with others. When I became a mom, I was inspired by the idea of creating a flexible life that allowed me to use my skills but also be there for my children.

How long have you been in business? 13 years

How did you fund it? At first, we put $5,000 on a credit card. Since then, we’ve used profits from existing projects to fund new projects. I am overjoyed that I don’t have investors or bank loans that make decisions for me.

Do you have a Fairy Godmother or Mentor? My future father-in-law was my high school journalism adviser. He has a “Mr Holland-esque” influence on journalism students, and I was no exception.

Do you belong to any Business Organization or Networking Groups? Corporate Alliance, Utah Valley Chamber of Commerce, United Way of Utah County Women in Philanthropy

Current Business Challenge: The climate for print journalism is undergoing rapid change. Although magazines aren’t as affected as newspapers, we know our “cheese” is moving. Readers love glossy magazines, but advertisers have new and cheaper options. And advertisers pay the bills, so we want to meet their changing needs.

What are you doing about it: We’ve been building up our blog readership, Facebook presence and other social media. We are offering online “shout outs” to our print advertising customers as an added incentive for them to maintain their marketing dollars with us. We are pointing readers from our magazine to our website and vice versa. Our ultimate goal is to help our advertisers see results from their ads — whether that is walk-in customers, click-throughs, Facebook “likes,” etc. We are encouraging our readers to interact with our advertisers in multiple ways.

Family: I’ve been married to my business partner, best friend and opposite for 16 years. We have 4 children and one on the way.

How do you balance family and business? My husband and I are raising a business and a family together. Every Sunday night, we plan out the week — including office hours, soccer carpool, shopping, etc. I would be absolutely insane if I didn’t have a supportive and hilarious husband. (When my stress level goes up, so does his humor.) I’ve also brought my kids to the office many times. When the youngest two took predictable afternoon naps, they often snoozed in the storage room at our office. We had a door hangar we put out that told our employees to enter quietly.

What do you do to relax? Not enough! I did take up running a couple years ago, and my first goal was to clear my mind. Gradually, I started picking up the pace and the mileage. I ran a half marathon this summer, as well as a 191-mile team relay. I’ve done several 5Ks and even placed in some low-turnout contests.

What do you want to change most about your world? I wish readers valued information enough to pay for it. With the proliferation of free online content, it is difficult (nearly impossible) to get readers to pay for information — either in print form or online. Yet, it is costly and time consuming to produce quality writing and photography.

What are you most proud of? I’m proud of myself for maintaining my roles as mother and entrepreneur. I am passionate about both, and I’m grateful that my journey includes a way to incorporate the two sides of my heart.

What advice would you like to offer other Start Up Princesses? Don’t sacrifice your family for your fortune. Take life in chapters if you need to, but don’t forget that family endures longer than profit/loss statements. I’m reminded of this when I look at old magazines I created. At the time, I thought they were SO IMPORTANT. But now they are just heaped at the bottom of recycling bins. It’s important to have perspective. At the same time, work IS important to me and to many female entrepreneurs. It shapes our happiness, our confidence, our opportunities and our satisfaction. The trick is to figure out what we value and let go of everything else (TV, extensive blog reading, oversleeping). Life is a journey, and everything gives us cumulative experience.

Favorite Magic Wand? My secret weapon is 4 a.m. to 7 a.m. These three hours are worth twice that later in the day. My phone doesn’t ring, my kids don’t ask questions and my inbox isn’t pinging. I’m also more creative and intelligent in the morning. The levels decrease throughout the day until I’m absolutely worthless by bedtime.

If you could design a tiara, what precious stones would you use? Passion, humor, ambition, curiosity, friendliness, lack of judgment, appropriate levels of competition

Meet Ishita Gupta, Founder of Fear.less Magazine & Touchpoint Speaker

August 4, 2011

We meet some inspiring and amazing women through Startup Princess.  What’s fun about what we do is that over time we start to meet “friends of friends” and our connections list becomes bigger and bigger.  Not only does our network expand, but so do our friendships.  We were introduced to Ishita through Seth Godin and we’re so grateful for the introduction because now Ishita is speaking at Touchpoint in Salt Lake City.  She’s in our Friday, September 16th keynote lineup.    She’s speaking on Making Meaning In Your Business & Contributing to the world.  Her message (and her business) is inspiring!

Name: Ishita Gupta

What you wanted to be when you grew up: Doctor first, then head of Non-profit, then hip-hop dancer

What you are: Storyteller, Visual Journalist

Summary of your Start Up: Fear.less Magazine is a digital magazine that empowers people through stories of overcoming fear.

Company Website:  fearlessstories.com

What inspired you: What inspired me was the fact that i learned through specific people’s stories – not general advice. And the fact that I was in a fearful moment and needed to hear what others were doing to combat their fear.

How long have you been in business? 2 years

How did you fund it? Funded by third party advertising.

Do you have a Fairy Godmother (or Mentor)? Parker Palmer, Seth Godin, Pam Slim

Do you belong to any Business Organization or Networking Groups? EC, Women’s prfoesssional Networks, Alternative MBA

What is your  current business challenge? Transitioning the magazine to fully online

What are you doing about it? Talking to web and my network to see the best way to do this

Favorite motivational quote: ”Hold fast to dreams for if dreams die, life is a broken-winged  bird that cannot fly.” -Langston Hughes

Tell us about your family: I’m single and have an amazing twin sister and younger brother that live in nyc and parents who live in detroit, michigan. they are everything to me.

How do you balance family and business?  Since i don’t have a family of my own, i’m blessed to have the time to work on my business and pursue other activities.  When you’re running a business, your best bet is to not try to achieve balance, which i don’t believe is a fitting word. Just prioritize and make sure you’re meeting your needs first and then those of the people you love. Balance is made by doing what you say you’ll do, going one step at a time, and constantly refocusing your energies.

What is your favorite book?  On Beauty – Zadie Smith, How Not to be Afraid of your life – Susan Piver, The Alchemist

What do you do to relax?  I write, read, drink tea, spend time near water and in nature, and DANCE!

What do you want to change most about your world?  What i want to change about the world is that i want everyone to be themselves authentically and not be afraid to be who you are.

What are you most proud of?  I’m most proud of the moments where i’m able to stick to my truth and do things that speak my truth even though they are challenging.

What advice would you like to offer other Start Up Princesses?  Your “real” voice can be an asset in your business just like any great sales or marketing plan.

Favorite Magic Wand (tool/resource)?  Google docs. The ability to act and not think.
