I’ve Launched My Business – Now What?! Free Teleconference
Meet Lara Galloway – The MomBizCoach
Collaboration, not competition – that’s how I feel every time I talk to Lara, the MomBizCoach. She provides valuable insights to working moms, and has been a friend of Startup Princess from the very beginning. It’s been a pleasure for us to cross paths again in the last few months and I’m excited to roll out a fabulous tele-seminar with her later this month. Stay tuned! – Michelle
Education: Masters in Comparative Literature
Professional Background: Almost 10 years at IBM doing PR and communications, then e-business sales; taught Spanish during my grad school days; started out working at various newspapers
What you wanted to be when you grew up: a teacher
What you are: a life coach/business coach
Brief Summary of your Start Up: I built the Mom Biz Coach brand to mentor and support mom business owners who want and need a fulfilling business of their own to have a successful life. Although I am a professionally certified Life Coach, most of my teaching comes directly from my experience of trying to run a business while running a family (not easy!). I offer private coaching, a group coaching program called the Mom Biz Academy, and weekend business intensive getaways called the Mom Biz Retreat. And since I run my whole business online, I offer a lot of training to women’s organizations on using Social Media to build your business.
Where you are located: Michigan
Company Website? www.mombizcoach.com and www.mombizretreat.com
What inspired you? Starting my business was a result of experiencing Post Partum Depression when I had my second child. It took me a while, but I finally realized that in order to be happy, I needed to do purposeful work outside of being a mom.
How long have you been in business? Since 2005, so seven years
How did you fund it? Luckily, starting my services business required very little money up front. I used our family savings for my Coaching Training program and for the basic things like business registration, setting up a bank account, logo design and website setup, etc. I did most of the work myself. As I made money, I invested it back into the business to upgrade what I had by hiring professionals to do some of the work I was trying to do.
Do you have a Fairy Godmother (or Mentor)? No Fairy Godmother, but I have several coaches and mentors.
Do you belong to any Business Organization or Networking Groups? Savor the Success and #MomBizMondays (I’m co-founder).
Current Business Challenge? Creating additional offerings that round out the product funnel for Mom Biz Retreat.
What are you doing about it? Surveying my audience about what they want, collaborating with my business partner and co-founder, and possibly hiring a business coach to guide me.
Favorite motivational quote: “Whether you think you can or think you can’t, you’re right.” Henry Ford
Family? Married to Richard for 14 years, mom of Charlie (9.5), Paul (8) and Ellie (5.5).
How do you balance family and business? Now that’s the $1M question, isn’t it? And probably also the cornerstone of all the coaching I do in my business . I set strong boundaries around my work time and my family time. I work when my children are at school. I get off the computer and don’t take work calls after they get home. Once every few months, I get away from my family and business and spend a weekend with a few fellow mompreneurs working hard on my business plans, marketing strategy, pitches, product funnel, etc. Extreme focus for a weekend on the work that makes my business successful allows me to maintain an easy-going weekly routine the rest of the time. I serve a home-cooked dinner at 6:30 just about every night, which keeps my family connected and healthy.
Favorite book? The Help
What do you do to relax? Snuggling on the couch or reading with the kids, taking long walks by myself, camping and hiking with my family, drinking wine with some close girlfriends
What do you want to change most about your world? Nothing. I’m grateful for my life just the way it is.
What are you most proud of? My babies.
What advice would you like to offer other Start Up Princesses? If your dreams and goals are important enough for you to commit to them, then get some support. There is so much more to starting a business than selling your stuff and getting paid for it.
Favorite Magic Wand (tool/resource)? My iPhone and all its apps! I run my whole business on that tiny little computer, and it gives me the flexibility I need to handle my life, household and business needs wherever I am (even deep in the woods of the Red River Gorge on a camping trip ).
If you could design a tiara, what precious stones would you use? I’m not exactly the tiara-type, but I suppose I’d choose something my kids pick up on one of our hikes. They’re always collecting cool stones and rocks that have interesting designs and textures. I prefer things that are interesting and unique and have a story to them rather than the finer things in life.
A Credo For Making It Happen – Video by Danielle LaPorte

How to Cope with Life’s Challenges while Running a Startup Business
Everyone knows someone who is hurting. This person might even be you… if so, my heart goes out to you and the many others who are struggling with challenging life circumstances. And many of you are not only dealing with your own pain, but are also raising a family and running a startup!!! I get how very hard this must be for you.
I am not a therapist but I love to help others succeed and am passionate about supporting our community. There are many who are seeking help and it is my hope that a few of the following ideas and insights will give you strength and healing. I have had my share of financial, health, and family challenges so I feel that I can relate to the pain and experiences that many of you may be facing right now. I remember days when I couldn’t afford gas, diapers, or food. I remember days when taking a shower was an accomplishment. I remember days when I felt so very alone and scared about what our future would be. Life has now shifted and we are in a good place, but those times were not that long ago and I remember what helped me through them and I want to share them with you. These are things that I do often and when I have a hard day I go back to this list and make sure I’m trying to do them.
First of all, you need a friend. Everyone needs a real friend, and if you don’t have one, seek for and pray for someone to show up in your life who you can talk to and share your struggles with who will be uplifting and supportive. This friend should be in a stable life situation, so they can be a mentor and offer good feedback. Ideally this is someone who you could call on a weekly basis or even text on a daily basis when things are very dark and hard. When identifying who your ‘friend’ is make sure they are willing to be this person in your life right now, you might need to be clear that you need to be the receiver of their friendship for a time but that you will try to also be available for them as they need you.
Self-nuturing, rest and good nutrition are very key for thinking more clearly and for managing the overwhelming circumstances. Be peaceful about decreasing your work load and increasing your rest. Take time to eat well and if you can’t manage it, ask for others to help make sure you’re eating healthy (avoid fast food, processed, refined, and canned food). Increase your water! Learn to love naps, 15 minutes can make a huge difference!
Create routines that give you some consistency. Just as children thrive with routines, so can we. The goal is to find routines that will help cheer you up when you’re having a hard week. Think of what will get you out of bed, get you moving, connecting with others and help you smile more often. Give yourself permission to create something you want to do for yourself. Consider one of the following… reading for 15 min each night before bed, weekly library day, walk to the park after dinner with your family once a week, enroll in a class you’ve always wanted to take, schedule a monthly massage, or whatever else you feel YOU want to do for YOU.
Try a Pains/Gains worksheet- This is excellent free therapy! Take a piece of paper and fold it vertically and on the left side write ‘PAINS’ and on the right write ‘GAINS’. Simply write down EVERY single pain you have on the left column, anything that is bothering you in any degree physically, mentally, emotionally, or spiritually. Write until you can’t think of another thing, take a break, reread it and add anything else. Then on the right side under ‘GAINS’ write down one thing per item that you can benefit from this particular pain. For example, if the pain is ‘headaches’ the gain can be ‘chance to rest more often’. While the headache isn’t great to deal with, the rest does have some benefit, forcing you to slow down and take time for healing.
Uplifting music can be an excellent mood booster. I memorized the lyrics of many songs that give me emotional and spiritual strength. I remember many times singing out loud the words of inspiring songs while I went on walks, showered, or drove my car. This very powerful, don’t underestimate the high vibration and energy music can offer you.
Mantras offer support when our spirits are low and we are feeling negative and or when we want to shift into a higher thought process and create something better for ourselves. Mantras or affirmations should be short and easy to memorize and repeat. For years I’ve used a very simple one when running or working out, “I am strong, I am fit, I am free, I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me” or I just shorten it to “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me”. Regardless of where you find inspiration and help, find what works for you, write it down and etch it into your heart and mind and whenever you have a moment when you’re feeling sad or need encouragement, turn to it. Reading anything uplifting can help when done repeatedly and when you see examples of people using faith and humility to overcome challenges.
Journaling is an effective form of release that is under used by busy women! Keep a small journal in your bag and another by your bedside to write down thoughts or feelings, express yourself freely and without restraint… burn it if necessary! Get out those feelings of pain and overwhelm. Write down all the things you’re grateful for often, make a list of 100 things and add to it daily.
Aromatherapy is a personal favorite for managing emotions. Are you aware of the power of smell? Do you have a diffuser? if not, get one here. I am a distributor and use the doTERRA essential oils brand. They are so powerful because they are better than organic (tested 3rd party, every liter) you can take them internally, topically, or use them in a diffuser. Excellent oils for emotional support are Citrus Bliss, Balance, Elevation, and Serenity. I use them over my heart and mind, put them in my bath water too. If you want to know more about these and how they work feel free to text me at 801-856-4765.
Remember that Touch is one of the most healing gifts we have been given. Give hugs, receive them, snuggle up with a child or loved one, get a massage, give one!
Connect to Nature! Whenever I go for a walk or look at our amazing mountains I’m uplifted and feel encouraged… the more time I’m off technology and into nature I’m feeling better about myself and the life that is mine to live.
Praying isn’t just for the church going types, its for everyone who believes in a higher being, in a Creator. Have you ever reached out and gave thanks for your life and blessings? Ever asked questions? Even if you’re new to prayer or its been a long time since you’ve prayed, I highly recommend you give it a try. There are many ways to pray, find what works for you. I believe in God the Father and in His son, Jesus Christ so this is how I do it: I start by saying, “Heavenly Father, Thank thee for….. I ask thee for …….. in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen. Then I wait and pause to listen to what I feel and any ideas or inspiration that comes to the questions or concerns I discussed and I write them down. I believe that when you take time to write down the inspiration you receive and then act on those things then your relationship with God and Christ increases. I especially recommend praying out loud and when possible in nature, it’s amazing. I love to pray because I feel connected, supported, and comforted.
Lastly, do you have a Vision Board or a Bucket List? If not, make one today! Dream, dream, dream, then put that dream into action little by little.
Keep the faith and hope alive that your challenges are temporary. Ask, ‘What am I supposed to learn from this so I can move forward?’ Listen, pay attention so the lesson can be complete.
Consider- How do you want to react to your situation? I invite you to do it with gratitude, love and peace. Choose to live daily with faith and I promise you that with a cheerful outlook life will improve every moment.
I hope you try some of these ideas and that they help you to feel more peace and more joy in your current situation and beyond, I feel honored to share them with you.
What ideas do you have to add? What helps you? We would love to hear from you!

What Does Easter Candy Have To Do With Your Entrepreneurial Venture?
If you’re anything like me and most Americans, you are probably on an Easter candy low. The highs of the previous weekend, and finding cheap gems the day after for 50% off have worn off and you are now experiencing the downside of the Peep rush.
It got me thinking. Here are some things that I’ve learned where Easter candy and entrepreneurship intersect:
1. Americans especially, love to get caught up in holidays and seasons. How can you make your product or service relevant through peak seasons? Now I don’t recommend making cheesy comparisons, just for the sake of trying to attach to the most current holiday (let’s stay away from overly peppy “Hoppy Coaching” Packages, for example or that you’ll throw in a box of marshmallow chicks if they buy your book
but think about YOUR product or service and see where it fits in the natural flow of the seasons. Do you have a gift product that works well around the holidays and Mother’s Day for example? Are you a coach that could benefit from attaching yourself to the New Years Resolution revolution? If so, start thinking about your “campaign” about 4-6 months in advance, and prep everything to hit your email list, facebook posts and anywhere else you are advertising during YOUR peak season.
2. Can you repurpose your product offerings to make them fit in different seasons? This works really well in the craft industry. Perhaps your products could be produced in pastel colors in the spring or bright colors for the summer. Just as M & M’s has mastered the colors of the holidays with their seasonal bags of chocolate goodness, you too, could take the same product and repurpose it to fit within the colors of the current season. Again, plan ahead so that you are selling these things 6 weeks in advance.
3. Test your seasonal products or services with focus groups or through other research before launching. It can be easy to get caught up in the seasonalness and forget strategy. Whether you are adjusting your marketing to fit the seasons or your products, make sure that you’ve done your research. It would be sad to see your product in the clearance bin for 75% off because it no longer fits. You’ll start to feel like a no name, hollow, chocolate bunny that can’t get anyone to buy it for 35 cents. Now, some of this will take trial and error, but remember the laws of supply and demand. It’s better to run out and be a hot product during the season, than to be stuck with inventory you have to store for a year or trash.

Coaching Challenge: Delegating
By Jane Murphy, Author of “What could happen if you do nothing?” A Manager’s Handbook for Coaching Conversations
Dave was a senior manager who was lost in the weeds of detail and minutia. He jumped in to take on big and small tasks. He suffocated others with constant reminders and suggestions, only to compromise the quality of the work they had so seriously invested in. Dave had lost his proper focus on the big picture and the future. His micromanagement led his people to believe that he ultimately did not trust them to do their jobs properly.
An executive coaching engagement has helped Dave sort out his real responsibilities in the organization . . . to focus on what’s important, the future rather than the present, the work he should be doing in leading his group versus the work he can pass on to someone else. During his coaching engagement, Dave also discovered opportunities to develop his people by having them assume greater responsibility.
Becoming more skilled at delegation has given Dave more freedom, and has enabled him to develop himself as well. Let’s look at the process:
What’s the whole view of the work to be done? What is our purpose? What are our objectives? What are the parts, and the steps to get to the finish line? What tasks can be farmed out to others, and what skills are essential to those tasks?
Self-assessment
What must remain under my control, and why? Where are my strengths and weaknesses, and what can I delegate to someone more capable?
Resources
What resources — time, budget, people — are available to me? How are these resources currently allocated, and how could that be improved?Stakeholder input
How are others — our reports, our team, our department colleagues, our boss, our customers — affected by our purpose and objectives? What recommendations could they make for improvements? Who could be given more responsibility? Next Steps
Once you’ve identified tasks to be delegated, you can define boundaries and success criteria, assign necessary resources and supervision, point out development opportunities and any potential problems.
Successful managers are successful delegators. They and their people realize many benefits beyond the work at hand, including:
- Greater engagement
- Cost and time efficiencies
- Individual and team development
What have you learned from your own delegating abilities?

Motivational Monday – What Would Your Life Be Like? #FireSS
One of my favorite burning questions from “The Fire Starter Sessions” by Danielle LaPorte, has me thinking today.
If you want to get in on the pre-order for the Fire Starter Sessions, check out the bonuses here. The bonuses are only available until the book hits the stores on April 17th.
Here’s the question for the day: Should business be easy?
Are YOU a Fire Starter?: Book Review The Fire Starter Sessions by Danielle LaPorte #FireSS
We’re excited to announce that Danielle LaPorte’s book The Fire Starter Sessions is being released this month!
I was lucky enough to get a sneak peak and I LOVED every inch of it. I love how it feels like I’m listening to her talk as I read the words. She has a great way keeping her speaking voice in her written words (I’m jealous of that!). It’s like she’s sitting there talking to me, I like chat with girl friends. It’s honest, it’s authentic and it’s incredibly moving.
The first time I sat down to read it every sentence made me say, “I need to tweet that…and that…and that.” Everything was so juicy. And to make it even better, my favorite part is that her best bits of wisdom are huge. Unmissable. Though every phrase might be tweetable, there are things she wants to make sure that you GET. Here’s one of my favorites:
The typography is phenomenal. It’s not a boring read. Danielle’s personality even comes through the layout and font.
This book can help anyone step up their success game and light the fire to be your own authentic, powerful and amazing self. It’s geared towards entrepreneurs though anyone can glean juicy wisdom from each page.
What I love about this book goes well beyond the words on the pages. We started working with Danielle at Startup Princess almost 4 years ago. Before The Spark Kit came out, before Your Big Beautiful Book Plan, before this book hits bookstores to become a New York Times Bestseller (I can feel it in my bones…). Before all that, she was a blog writer and was a candid fire starter herself – out to squeeze the real passion out of every human being. Igniting corporate professional cube sitters into budding, inspiriting entrepreneurs. Looking back on the last 4 years has been a treat to watch, and a blueprint that any aspiring speaker, author and changemaker can pattern for success. Share your voice for free online, inspire others in one-on-one coaching, get out there and speak, create phenomenal products then in four years, you could have your own best seller ready to hit the book stores.
This book is the perfect mix of helping find out who you really ARE and what you want to BE with the added bonus of helping you take the steps necessary to live your own great life.
As Danielle says, “Mindfulness and contemplation is only half the equation. You’ve got to take some action, Jackson.”
And honestly, the message that I got for me, was “What are you waiting for?” Some juicy stuff is coming down the pipe, all because I read this book and because I love Danielle so much.
If you want to get in on the pre-order for the Fire Starter Sessions, check out the bonuses here. The bonuses are only available until the book hits the stores on April 17th. You won’t regret it, and you’ll be on your way to making a movement of your own.
Happy reading and Happy Friday!
